What we're about

Finally, a workout to look forward to instead of dreading. Say goodbye to the pain of dragging your feet to the gym and let the music move your body to your favourite groove. One hour to dance on your own and purely for yourself - your body will thank you for it!

What Is Dance For Yourself?

Dance For Yourself is a weekly chance to dance for the pure joy of dancing. We turn the music on for one hour so that you can move to the beat without the judgement of others (or yourself!) It happens in Windsor on a Thursday night from 7:00-8:00 PM @ Windsor Presbyterian Church, 58 Maygar Street Windsor 4030

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC IS IT?

We aim for a little bit of everything. From swing, to dance, to world, to pop, to folk, to rock, to hip-hop, to soul, to super cheesy top 40. We like dance floor classics, and we like weird things we've never heard before. You'll hate some of it, but you'll love a lot of it. And you can always sit out for a song or shrug on the spot if anything doesn't take your fancy - it's not like anyone will see you! Here is a sample:

DO PEOPLE GO ON THEIR OWN?

It's about half/half. Regardless, most everyone finds room on the dance floor to dance independently. Attending alone is totally normal, welcome and even encouraged!

SO WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Whatever makes you feel comfortable to dance in - sweatpants, bike shorts, your office attire, or a one-piece full-sequined leotard. The only rule is that you do need to wear clothes.
DO PEOPLE TALK?Here and there. But not really - the music is loud and people are there to dance, so the most verbal activity that happens is the whooping and cheering while dancing.

IS IT A BIT OF SCENE? WHO GOES TO THIS THING?

Nope! Sure, the bell curve probably straddles 30-somethings, but there's generally a good mix of ages, genders, bodies, backgrounds, and dance styles smile emoticon We've had four-year-olds and over 65-year-olds, and everything in between. The beauty of the dark is that it doesn't really matter. If you want to be there, then you belong!

WHAT IF I HATE IT?

You won't. But if it turns out that it's not your thing, no worries at all, you're welcome to leave at any point and no one will notice anyway!

WHAT IF I LOVE IT?

Then you can come every week, for the rest of your life.

GUIDELINES: Bring a bottle of water, dress to sweat.

We usually have between 30 - 40 participants most of them RSVP on Facebook:

Ecstatic Dance is a conscious movement practice that invites people to drop out of their minds and into their bodies to unwind and open to inner wisdom. Dance, Music and Cacao Medicine are the center point of these ceremonies catalyzing ecstatic states, where conscious mind limitations dissolve, opening the doors to the vast subconscious intelligence. It is an opportunity to connect deeply with self and others in fun ways words cannot express. A gracious experience to meet yourself as you are and open a space where you can see beyond who you think you are... It’s about you, freedom, joy and honesty.

This journey will offer a space to develop self-awareness, be moved by deep emotions, expand your intuitive awareness and align your actions with your intentions.

What kind of music is played? And what do we do?

We play music that encourages movement. Our sonic journey is a fusion of world music, electronica, dubstep, tribal house, classic remixes and more! In this space, all are welcomed into radical self-expression and acceptance. Do yoga, stretch, dance like no one is watching, or just chill and enjoy the music.

  • 5:30 PM - Yoga fusion (please bring a yoga mat)
  • 6:30 pm - Opening circle – it’s a chance for you to get to know who is in the room and if you want to share a bit about yourself. If you don’t feel like talking, just pass the feather.
  • 6:45pm - Warmup exercises designed to bring comfort, relaxation and prepare you for the trance immersion.
  • 7:00 pm – Music starts in a low beat to give you the chance to ground into your body. The rhythm progressively increases once the room starts to move. It may reach a high energy several times during the dance and slow down to conclude with a smooth landing back to stillness at the end.
  • 9:00 pm - Music stops and we have a wind-down meditative moment. Depending on the event – there will be Singing bowls, Didgeridoo, Flute or other traditional acoustic instruments to help in this process.
  • 9:20 pm – Closing circle – we clap together three times and the fourth time back to the earth to close.
  • 9:30 pm – Non-verbal time is over - have a chat with the people you shared the space with during the dance.
  • Occasionally we have a Kava ceremony or Hot Tea during the cold months and hang out for some time.

Arrive and leave whenever you want but be mindful not to disturb the other participants.
