These group discussions meet in the homes of our members. Bring your favorite adult beverages and your curiosity. Bringing food is optional. The concept for DT Discussions 2 is basically the same as the original DT Discussions, but with one exception: in DT Discussions 2 our topics are usually inspired by our favorite books. The topic for this evening is:
Galileo's Daughter by Dava Sobol
Inspired by long fascination with Galileo and the surviving letters of his daughter, a cloistered nun, Sobel has written a biography of the one Einstein called "the father of modern physics--indeed of modern science altogether." Galileo's Daughter presents a portrait of a person hitherto lost to history, described by Galileo as "a woman of exquisite mind, singular goodness, and most tenderly attached to me." Galileo's Daughter dramatically recolors the personality and accomplishment of a mythic figure whose 17th-century clash with Catholic doctrine continues to define the schism between science and religion.
The discussion leader is Jared. For this talk, we'll be focusing on the opening section of the book, "Part I: To Florence."
