The Amish must be among the worst of brain washers. Never have I understood how they settled on a form of transportation that was modern in the late 18th or early 19th century (the buggy), and shun cars. Why do they accept the wheel. Shouldn't they just walk or ride donkeys, which I guess was common in the time of Christ. They are just nuts, I think. The completely screw up the minds of their children. Those who muster the will to leave the clan when they grow up rarely can find happiness in the real world, thanks to guilt. Amish would all be dead if the sinful society about them did not protect them from the bad guys.

I thinkers they stopped when they thought magic was involved. Internal combustion and electricity are the work of the Devil!

I think it's misnamed. We are extraordinarily flexible creatures and need to adapt to a culture to survive (and thrive). Culture is us. Let's hope we live in one that tends toward the good. (And yes there is biological "human nature" too--and part of it makes us readily adapt to cultures!)

If the focus were purely on culture then I'd agree about the misnaming. Culture will surely be a large part of the discussion as I suspect the focus will be on what is simply culture versus what is shaping beliefs against the will or better judgement of an subjects. Also, what gives actors the motivation to shape others and what gives the acted-upon the susceptibility to be shaped.
