What is your favorite tool for visualizing data?

Gephi for networks, Tibco's Spotfire for big data

Do you think data visualization is more of an art or more of a science? Why?

It's a combination of the two but (maybe) a little more art. The art of communication is primary. Statistics and strong analysis, while important, don't seem to mean much if the findings can't be communicated in an effective manner.

I'm relatively new to the big data field but have pursued an education in mixed method, qualitative-quantitative research design, data collection, and analysis for over a decade. I am most interested in international research topics like public health, international development, public policy, food systems, and agrarian microenterprise research. My dissertation, entitled "SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH ALTERNATIVE ECONOMIC NETWORKS: REDEFINING RELATIONS IN THE COMMODITY CHAIN FOR EXPORT VEGETABLES IN WESTERN GUATEMALA" is my most recent attempt at experimenting with diverse methods of data collection, analysis, and (yes) visualization by integrating quantitative and qualitative methods. I'm really quite eclectic and up for just about anything new and exciting that helps to communication information visually to broad audiences.

Introduction

My background is in Sociology and Anthropology, with a focus on research design, data analysis, and mixed methods research. Since graduating with my PhD in Comparative Sociology I have worked as a Data Scientist for Sherpa Analytics.
