DataPhilly January 2013 Meetup - An Introduction to Machine Learning

Hey Everyone,

We are going to start out our technical talks with an Introduction to Machine Learning.

The talk will cover:

  • An overview of the different types of Machine Learning algorithms.
  • Some of the problems you can solve with each type of algorithm.
  • The toolkit and workflow of a data scientist.

A big thank you goes out to MetaLayer for hosting this event and to AWeber for providing food and refreshments!

Hope to see you on January 30th!

Thanks Mike for organizing an actual Data Science meetup. I was thinking we could have domain-specific sessions to focus on data in a particular context. I am in the bioinformatics/genomics field and am open to reviewing marketing, financial, economics, political/social science data, etc. We could also go over various data visualization methods from d3.js, extjs, R(ggplot2), Pandas, etc. Maybe we could have an event in conjunction with the PhillyR or Phillyjs groups?

Nice meeting with you all last night. I would love to do something more interactive in the future and longer. Slides are nice for an overview but it would be great to be able to interact with a dataset as a group. Maybe set up a few laptops with various common tools and break up into groups concocting interesting queries and analysis and bouncing ideas off each other like a bunch of kids playing with legos. I'm sure we all have interesting ideas to share about how to approach various common problems. I'm more of a software engineer than a data analyst, so I can't really take the lead on this. I'm just tossing out there what I would find interesting.

There should have been a little more prep, seemed very disorganized.

Thanks for the feedback Joe, and glad you could come out! It was our first talk, so we definitely plan to run things smoother next time. Hope to see you again.

It was good, but short and not very in-depth
