What we're about

This group is for anyone who is interested in Apache Cassandra™ (https://www.datastax.com/why-datastax/apache-cassandra), Spark, GraphDB, Web, CLI, or other application development, and DataStax topics. All interest and expertise levels are welcome.

Learn the latest in the world of big data storage from engineers, architects, designers, administrators, and more.

Interested in hosting or speaking at one of our Meetups? Fill out this form and we'll be in touch! (https://goo.gl/forms/vZMeR346k9lqGKd32)

We’re passionate about Apache Cassandra, Spark, Solr/Lucene, TinkerPop, Gremlin, Graph, Docker, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Redis, Netflix OSS, and all things big distributed data.

This Meetup is powered by the data lovers at DataStax, major contributors to the Apache Cassandra project and creators of DataStax Enterprise (DSE).

Interested in learning more about Apache Cassandra and DSE? We have extensive courses, ad hoc learning videos, blogs, and more on DataStax Academy (https://academy.datastax.com/).

Is meeting once a month not enough? (We feel the same way.) Check out our event page (https://academy.datastax.com/events)!

Cassandra monitoring, past, present and future & Ingest Data from RDBMS to C*

Agenda • 6:00 - Food and Social Time • 6:30 - Main Presentations Presentations: "If I can’t see it, it didn’t happen - Cassandra monitoring, past, present and future" by Jeff Carpenter Observability is a much-sought-after attribute in modern applications, and this trend has thankfully extended into the database tier. In this talk, we’ll look at the past, present and future of monitoring Cassandra and DataStax Enterprise, including the perils of JMX, the great sidecar debate and how it relates to metrics, and why DataStax chose a path to transition away from the metrics capabilities built into OpsCenter toward a more open metrics approach based on Prometheus and Grafana. "Ingest Data from Relational Databases to Cassandra with StreamSets" by Pat Patterson So you need to migrate some data from an existing relational database (RDBMS) to Apache Cassandra™. But How? Or, how about ingesting from an RDBMS to a Kerberized DataStax cluster? What about a one-time batch load of historical data vs streaming changes? You could write and deploy some custom code, utilizing a framework like Apache Spark. Sometimes that makes sense, but often it requires significant time and resources. So what are the alternatives...? In this talk, we'll explore how you can use the open source StreamSets Data Collector for migrating from an existing RDBMS to DataStax or Apache Cassandra™. About the presenters: Jeff Carpenter Jeff Carpenter leads the Developer Advocate team at DataStax, leveraging his background in system architecture, microservices, and Apache Cassandra to help empower developers and operations engineers to build distributed systems that are scalable, reliable, and secure. Jeff has worked on projects ranging from a complex battle planning system in an austere network environment, to a cloud-based hotel reservation system and is the author of Cassandra: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition. Pat Patterson Pat Patterson has been working with Internet technologies since 1997, building software and communities at Sun Microsystems, Huawei, Salesforce, and StreamSets. At Sun, Pat was the community lead for the OpenSSO open source project, while at Huawei he developed cloud storage infrastructure software. As a developer evangelist at Salesforce, Pat focused on identity, integration and the Internet of Things. Now Director of Evangelism at StreamSets, Pat helps enterprises unlock the value in their data.
