The Navy Seals and Shipwrecks by the Sea!
Wednesday, November 16 Leave Viera Walmart Murphy's Gas Station at 830am and Palm Bay Road Walmart Murphy's Gas Station 855am
10am -11:45am Visit and learn about the history and development of the UDT’s (Underwater Demolition Teams) and SEALS (Sea, Air, Land Teams), Naval Combat Demolition Units, Scouts and Raiders through photographs and artifacts. The collection features weapons, equipment and underwater suits. Outdoor displays include boats, submersibles, small landing craft, a helicopter and Apollo training modules. The small weapons and other artifacts collected from North Vietnamese soldiers alone warrant a visit. This location was actually on a World War II beach training site. The information about the vigorous training, hell week and the missions that have been accomplished are fascinating and inspirational.
On display at the National Navy UDT- SEAL Museum is the actual 10,000 pound, fiberglass lifeboat that was the epicenter of a hijacking by Somalian pirates on Easter Sunday April 2009. Three of the pirates held the Maersk Alabama’s captain, Richard Phillips, hostage for four days on this lifeboat before U.S. Navy SEALs shot them dead, freeing the captain. Donated by Maersk Line Limited. Next we’re back on the Minibus to lunch (Dutch treat on own so you can order as much or as little as you want) at the Iconic Captain Hirams overlooking the Indian River in Sebastian. This restaurant has been a landmark in the area for a long time and although it is best known for its’ fish selections the other choices are delicious also. Our afternoon attraction is the Mclarty Treasure Museum. This spot displays relics salvaged from the 1715 shipwreck off the nearby coast. The observation deck overlooks the sight where modern day Salvagers scour the area with seismograph machines. A movie highlights the colorful history of the area. This is why we call this area of shoreline, the Treasure Coast. Come and learn it’s history and witness the beauty. Cost: $55 per person members (MOAA or Travel Club) Guests $60
