Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach Saturday, December 3 Historic District of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island and Cumberland Island Cruise ***Long Ride Long Day (Cruise is one of the highest rated in the entire Southeast region.)
Cumberland Island Tour
One of our most popular cruises, this 10:30 a.m. two-hour cruise offers an extensive and rich history of Amelia and Cumberland Island, with views of wildlife seen along the way. From Fernandina's shrimp boats, historic Old Towne and Ft. Clinch, to the wild horses of Cumberland Island and the ruins of the Carnegie Dungeoness Mansion and the Greyfield Inn, our historians will share the colorful stories that define the character of this unique part of the world.
(departs 10:30 a.m. - 2 hour tour)
Fernandina moved from Old Town to its present location to become the terminus of Floridas first cross state railroad, constructed[masked] from Fernandina to Cedar Key. In 1973, a 30 block area of Fernandina was named a Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places because of the amazing preservation of late Victorian architecture. In 1987 the District was expanded to include 50 blocks. Today, we will enjoy a driving and walking tour, stopping to visit the most impressive of the 44 incredible buildings. Fernandina Beach is a slice of Victorian Decor. The B&B’s are the showcase for that industry. The town’s history includes rulers of eight different flags including some colorful Pirate characters. The extensive Amelia Island Plantation sits in a landscaped and wooded setting next to two State Parks. Another State Park is Fort Clinch which has Canon Demonstrations, outfits and civil war history. Touring the fort’s medical facilities from that time period is fascinating although painful even to look at. The fort sits directly over the water from Georgia. The Downtown area has Florida’s oldest pub and a courthouse. The driving tour includes some scenic buildings and homes of the Victorian Style.
The Way home includes a drive through St. Augustine’s Acclaimed Nights of Lights.
