I can't believe I've lived in Dayton all my life and only visited this garden for the first time last spring. What a delight! The natural spring plantings are just what we need to blow the winter off us! It's an easy, level walk, but dress for the occasion. It might be muddy. Anyone interested can meet at the Buckhorn Tavern for a bite to eat after the walk. AULLWOOD GARDEN To many, Marie Aull was the godmother of the environmental movement in southwestern Ohio. As both a conservationist and gardener, she loved Dayton and its natural beauty, and she devoted her life to preserving it. Visitors to her former country garden retreat can enjoy the collection of wildflowers, beautiful gardens and natural areas she and her husband, John, worked for years to curate. For decades, this living work of art has touched visitors emotionally and spiritually with its diversity and abundance of floral displays, towering trees and serenity. The 31-acre park has a picturesque creek, a prairie, woods and gardens planted with native and exotic flowers. It is conveniently located just south of U.S. 40 past the Aullwood Audubon Center in Dayton. “There are three different stages in gardening: First you just want to fill up space. Then you become a collector, wanting to match similar plants, such as filling up a whole bed with petunias. Finally, you want to paint a picture. Your picture reaches ‘perfection’ one day and then immediately begins to change and head for a new and different perfection.” – Marie Aull
