Ever thought about building your own speakers? Want to know what it takes to do it? Then come to the Basics of Speaker Building Class at Decatur Makers.

This will be a two part / two meetup class. Part I will cover the science, art and design aspects; Part II will cover physical construction. (You must take Part I to join in Part II (

Part I:

* Basics of sound and acoustics and how this applies to speakers
* Sound and subjectivity... "They sound good to me, what do you think?"
* Types of speakers, speaker components
* Basic steps of speaker design
* How to use the software to design your boxes
* Crossover selection and design
* Basics of boxes (construction to be covered in more detail in part II)

As a bonus, there is the option to purchase a set of drivers for your speakers at a ridiculously low price of $40 for two woofers and two tweeters. They are New Old Stock Cerwin Vega parts. The woofer is used in the E-706 bookshelf speakers ($300/pair MSRP), the tweeters are used in the RL-18P speakers ($1000/pair MSRP). There are only ten sets available to the first ten students to sign up for them.

We will go through the design steps for a pair of bass reflex speakers based on these drivers. We have two software packages that were purchased for use of members. "DATS" from Parts Express is used to measure the electrical and mechanical properties of the woofers required to design the boxes. "BassBox Lite" will then be used, along with the measured parameters, to design sample enclosures.

We have created two different test designs which can be seen... and listened to... in the eShop at the space. Drop by, plug in some tunes and check them out.

Part I will be taught the evening of Monday, July 31st from 7-9pm

= $35 for non-members of Decatur Makers (for more info and to join, click here (
= $25 for members of Decatur Makers (please pay full amount and we will refund you the difference.)

Part II:

* materials to consider when building a speaker
* joint options
* safe operation of table saw
* rip cuts
* dado cuts
* safe operation of router on router table
* rabbet joints
* hole jig
* oval jig

We’ll build two speaker enclosures and learn how to cut holes for the drivers. Jigs will be provided for the speakers offered for sale in Part I. At the end of the class you’ll be checked out on both the table saw and the router table, two challenging tools in the woodshop!

Date/time for Part II is August 5, 12-3:00pm
Cost for Part II only is $20 for members, $30 for nonmembers including materials for building two bookshelf speakers. You must register separately for this class: Click here. (
