Let's Discuss "Love and Other Consolation Prizes" by Jamie Ford
For twelve-year-old Ernest Young, a charity student at a boarding school, the chance to go to the World's Fair feels like a gift. But only once he's there, amid the exotic exhibits, fireworks, and Ferris wheels, does he discover that he is the one who is actually the prize. The half-Chinese orphan is astounded to learn he will be raffled off--a healthy boy "to a good home." The winning ticket belongs to the flamboyant madam of a high-class brothel, famous for educating her girls. There, Ernest becomes the new houseboy and befriends Maisie, the madam's precocious daughter, and a bold scullery maid named Fahn. Their friendship and affection form the first real family Ernest has ever known--and against all odds, this new sporting life gives him the sense of home he's always desired. But as the grande dame succumbs to an occupational hazard and their world of finery begins to crumble, all three must grapple with hope, ambition, and first love. Fifty years later, in the shadow of Seattle's second World's Fair, Ernest struggles to help his ailing wife reconcile who she once was with who she wanted to be, while trying to keep family secrets hidden from their grown-up daughters. Against a rich backdrop of post-Victorian vice, suffrage, and celebration, Love and Other Consolations is an enchanting tale about innocence and devotion--in a world where everything, and everyone, is for sale.

What we're about

Are you looking for a women's book club where the members love to read, talk and share a laugh or two about books? Join us! The purpose of this group is simple - we read books and we discuss them. Once or twice a month we meet at a local restaurant and enjoy a couple of hours away from the family discussing a book we've read with other fun and interesting women. You'll see as you browse books we've read and books we'll be reading, we have an eclectic reading list with one thing at its center - members like you who enjoy reading a variety of books and discussing them with women you enjoy meeting with each month, sharing your thoughts and laughter.

Although we ask for RSVPs so we'll know how many seats to ask for at the restaurant if there is a wait list for a scheduled meeting put yourself down and plan to come anyway - we always have room for extras!

There are many book clubs and venues in Atlanta for socializing and if all you want to do is drink and socialize we encourage you to join one of these groups instead of our book club. As noted, our focus is to discuss books which in and of itself will be a social activity. Also, there are many book clubs and venues in Atlanta for writers to discuss writing and individuals sending solicitations to promote their books so please kindly remember we are not a forum for members who are authors to discuss writing and promote their books or people sending us emails to promote their books.
