First, I'd like to apologize for shouting "Shut-up!" when Alan was attempting to speak. As a humanist, "Everyone, please be quiet." would have been more appropriate. I wish I could have stayed longer as there were many more people I would have liked to engage. With that said, I think the celebration was a great success. I was astounded at the number of people attending. Our next event is the freethinkers forum which I believe is Jan. 18th. I'd also like to propose a get together over brunch on Feb. 9th in celebration of Charles Darwin's 205th birthday. Dave Martin

Had a good time -- wish I could have talked to more people, though! It was great to see so many of us all together.

It appears that a good time was had by all although a couple did leave early. Stanley's did a fine job, the waiters assigned to our group were helpful and responsive so the food and bar service went very smoothly. The food was more than adequate and they provided vegetarian dishes to those who requested them. The room worked out very well for the 50 that attended and the space for the keyboard artist, George Fox, worked well also. George's playing added immensely to the event. Finally, the juggling act by the husband and wife team, The Hoffmans, was well received, especially by the children. All in all, the DAH's Winter Sostice/Human Light event was a great success. Thanks to all those the supported us and to the folks that put on the party.

From your comments may I conclude that you are volunteering to be on the committee for the next such event?

I certainly will. Most importantly, Diana has an extensive background in professional event planning (it is part of her job at UDEL) and together I think we could help to take into account things like specific food requirements and/or incorporating different types of entertainment.

My wife and I had a simply wonderful time last night! It's so nice to come together with so many people - of all ages & backgrounds - who share many of the same ideals. We look forward to as many more of these gatherings as possible and thanks to the all the people who made this possible.

This was my first meeting and I truly had a great time. I met a lot of wonderful people who took me in as one of them. Thank you to all and a special thank you to Alan. Looking forward to the June conference but hope to see you before that time. Thank you all!

<Sigh> Well, it looks like the extended family Christmas dinner has just fallen into our laps, and Susan is in full-blown panic mode because we're not really even ready for the holiday for just the four of us. Sorry for the late notice to go along with the late notice that we were planning on showing up, but it looks like instead of the party we're going to be engaged in some combination of cleaning, cookie baking, grocery shopping, and gift wrapping which will continue at a frantic pace over the next few days.

Just contacted Stanley's and they indicated that they would not serve vegetarians only herbed potatoes and glazed carrots and that there will be a vegetarian option.

I also have to say that apparently the organizers of the party are slightly clueless as to how to organize a function of this nature. The main dishes themselves are not the usual fare as routinely there is something like a pasta dish and a meat. If the intent was to have lesser-priced items on the menu I doubt that salmon would have included.

We've gotta work out kinks like this ... just sayin' ...

So they don't have a vegetarian option? Ryan and I are pescetarian so we'll eat the salmon but its not b really fair to not have anything else. And you're Right, if they were trying to make it cheaper they would have had more vegetarian options.

No problem. I am not a big eater. Most places have a veggie burger. I will look on the menu. No problem at all and I thank you for being so considerate.

Tish, I do not think you will like the meal, except for the herbed potatoes and the glazed carrots. The mains are meatballs in marinara sauce and salmon cakes. You are more than welcome and you may pay at the door.

I almost wish that I had not assumed that there was a vegetarian substitute; potatoes & glazed carrots do not a meal make & I, for one, am not at all pleased by discovering that Stanley's Tavern is unable (or unwilling) to have something like a pasta primarvera (at the very least) made available for vegetarians (which, as you know, is a lifestyle choice of many atheists/humanists). Clearly this needs to be rectified.

I notice a few things on the menu that would be acceptable (salad bar, pizza, some of the appetizers) and one is actually listed as being vegetarian: the Portobello "Philly" - portobello mushroom, caramelized onions, roasted peppers, provolone, steak roll (vegetarian). the price of this sandwich is $9.49. Can this be substituted? Not sure if there are any vegans but a cheese substitute would be somewhat simple. Same thing for anyone who may need gluten-free.

Don, I should have also asked the names of the group as there will be name tags. You may reply on this site or send directly to [masked]. I look forward to meeting you and the family.

Don Lloyd, you can pay at the door but we need to know how many in your party and if any are under 13.

    December 18, 2013

      Four total, one under 13

      December 19, 2013

I can send a check tomorrow or pay at the door. Just curious as to what it covers as I am vegetarian, however have no problem donating it to the cause. I am just in a bit of a squeeze now as we all are.
    Thank you.
    Tish
Oh, it is just me-I am working on a friend or 2 but I would not count them!

Any chance of accepting late signups or walk-ins? My family wants to go but schedules are even more touch-and-go this time of year than usual so I was hesitant to sign up until closer to the event.
