Lunchbox

The Lunchbox

In the romantic drama The Lunchbox, middle-class housewife Ila (Nimrat Kaur) is trying once again to add some spice to her marriage, this time through her cooking. She desperately hopes that a new recipe will finally arouse some kind of reaction from her neglectful husband. She prepares a special lunchbox to be delivered to him at work, but, unbeknownst to her, it is mistakenly delivered to another office worker, Saajan (Irrfan Khan, Life of Pi), a lonely man on the verge of retirement. Curious about the lack of reaction from her husband, Ila puts a little note in the following day's lunchbox, in the hopes of getting to the bottom of the mystery. This begins a series of lunchbox notes between Saajan and Ila, and the mere comfort of communicating with a stranger anonymously soon evolves into an unexpected friendship. Gradually, their notes become little confessions about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, and even small joys. In the big city of Mumbai that so often crushes hopes and dreams, Ila and Saajan become lost in a virtual relationship that could jeopardize both their realities. Co-written and directed by Ritesh Batra.

I loved this film, and it has to be a favorite this year alongside The Grand Budapest Hotel. It was a great food film in the tradition of Eat, Drink, Man, Woman and Babette's Feast. The handwritten letters added an intimacy that was a theme shared with Her. The relationship with Auntie added some humor to the somewhat lonely place that Ila found herself. You are left with the sense that it's never too late for pursuing happiness when your life seems routine and less than happy.

The movie was great! It had a lot of parts to it and made for a great discussion after wards. The theater was nice , clean and the seats were comfortable. I met some wonderful people and was able to engage in interesting conversations at the wonderful Induan restaurant after the movie. The food was fantastic and the portions were big for an appetizer! I took food home! Thank you. I look forward to going again real soon.

What is the parking situation at this theater? Any tips?

    April 3, 2014

The parking is outdoors in an uncovered parking lot, but it is huge, so I'm sure you'll find a spot. Wear boots for walking through it. I think it's by a Sprouts, East side of CO Blvd.

Well, I'm downgraded to a maybe on this one. Really want to see this movie but if the weather doesn't improve I'm staying in. So over the snow already...

Lisa, Thanks! I am still probably a 'no'. I am up in the mountains (for a few more years) and we got a lot of snow but the roads are starting to look a lot better. Today was crazy at work and I have been up since before 5am. Chances are I am going to get home and crash before the sun goes down. :)

Clear roads and the snow is melting. Yay! I'm back to being a yes. Leaving work now. See you all soon. We'll miss you, Heather. Hope you can join us next time. :-)

It appears I am once again going to have to work late. I am a maybe. Don't wait for me. Look for Kieran, your event host (Movie Man).

I'm going to be at the Indian restaurant at 5:45 if anyone would like to join me. I can't wait to eat.

Hopefully, you will be willing to go back to India Oven after the film and participate in the discussion!

Hi, Sue! I'll join you all for dinner.

I will probably eat before hand as that is to late to eat for me. Admittedly, disappointed on movie choice (doesn't seem to be type I would enjoy) BUT I am going to try and keep an open mind and try something new. Never know, I could surprise myself. :)

Even if you do eat beforehand, please consider joining us at the Indian restaurant afterward for the discussion.

It looks like the snow is winding down by midday, so I'm still in for the movie.
As much as I love Indian food, to make it at that time I'd need to go through the mouse trap at the peak of rush hour, and that's difficult even in good weather. So I'll regret missing the delicious pre-dinner.

I double booked myself! If my other obligation clears up I'll come for sure :) Looking forward to the next movie! I recently had a short I worked on released online. Black Friday is a horror film, I did wardrobe design and was the art director. You can watch here: http://youtu.be/z4E9tPs0aDI

Maybe we should hit India's afterwards since it is right next door. :)

WARNING: Do not go to this hungry. I made that mistake and went out to eat Indian food after and nearly polished off all the food in the restaurant!

While this is totally the movie I wanted, I just made plans with my mother to catch this movie at another time. Have fun!
