• Design Thinking Happy Hour!
Our 2018 workshop series may be over, but we've heard from you loud and clear that you still want opportunities to keep connecting with the Seattle design thinking community. We are excited to host a Design Thinking happy hour- no workshops, no structured activities, just good people and a chance to connect (or reconnect) with others who are passionate about bringing human-centered design to their industries/communities. We will have a table at Fremont Brewing Co on Tuesday 10/23 from 4PM-6:30PM- swing by, say hi, and bring your design thinking questions and success (or failure) stories to share! For those who have been wanting to attend but couldn't make our 4th Thursday events, we've intentionally scheduled this on a different day in the hopes you might be able to join us. In true design thinking spirit, this is a bit of a prototype- if lots of people attend and give a thumbs up, we'll try to host more of these. If you have other ideas of events you'd like to see, leave a message and inspire us! (or better yet, let us know if you'd like to help host/plan an event). Special thanks to Meetup members Celine and Amy for planning this event- make sure to say thanks if you see them there!

Details For our August meetup we'll conclude our four part series that we began in May in which we break the design thinking approach down into four phases: Immerse, Frame, Imagine, and Prototype. There is no need to have attended the previous months workshops- each workshop is designed to stand alone even if you were not able to attend prior or subsequent events. In each month of the series we will explore one of the four phases in depth, as well as how to apply the associated methods and mindsets to a range of different industries and situations. For August we'll focus on the Prototype phase with an emphasis on activities and tools that help us quickly bring ideas to life in order to share them and get feedback from colleagues and customers. We'll introduce tools and methods to prototype digital products, physical experiences and new service concepts, and discuss how different industries can apply rapid prototyping techniques. As always, come prepared to engage in a highly experiential workshop, meet a diverse collection of fellow innovators, and learn tools you can use to help make Seattle a human-centered and innovative city! • Story Telling + SPECIAL GUEST: The Presidential Innovation Fellows Team
Human-Centered storytelling One of the essential skills for creativity and innovation is storytelling- whether you are pitching a new concept, sharing the story of what you've learned on a project, or trying to gain buy-in and support for a change initiative, story matters! For our April Meetup we'll explore the power of story, introduce a few simple frameworks for crafting powerful and compelling stories, and practice ways we can bring storytelling into our work. SPECIAL GUESTS: Presidential Innovation Fellows We're going to have some special guests this month from the Presidential Innovation Fellows (PIF) program! The PIF program was established by the White House in 2012 to attract top innovators into government, capable of tackling issues at the convergence of technology, policy, and process. The program pairs mid-to-senior level entrepreneurs, technologists, designers and data scientists with top civil-servants and change-makers working within the federal government to tackle some of our nation’s biggest challenges. Fellows projects have focused on improving care and access to benefits for our veterans, re-imaging cancer clinical trials to increase awareness and access for patients, defining an ecosystem to help the private sector manage risk and mitigate threats, and creating a central digital location to share and improve outcomes for children within the foster care system. Fellows have included the CEO of Symantec, Lead Developer of Google Maps, the Former CEO/Founder of Shuttterstock, and many more. Come meet Saran Kaba, Josh Difrances, and Clara Tsao and learn more about opportunities in civic technology and how design thinking is used in government! • Design Thinking & Cognitive Biases
We ended our February meetup with a brief conversation about cognitive biases and we'd like to continue that thread in March. We're going to dive a bit deeper into what cognitive biases are, explore a small selection of them, and consider ways that we can leverage Design Thinking to help us counter and/or leverage the effect that biases have on us. It's not important to have attended any prior Design Thinking meetup to participate this month and we look forward to seeing a lot of new and familiar faces! • Empathy Extravaganza: Driving more human connections at work and at home
Our February meetup will focus on the power of empathy to drive human connection. We'll explore what the heck empathy is all about, do some activities that help us explore how to connect with each other, and discuss how we can use empathy to bust our cognitive biases, unlock new innovative solutions, and help us build stronger connections with our colleagues, family and communities. This month's meetup will feature guest co-facilitator Sara Bayless de Costa, a Sr service and interaction designer at Fjord. As always, come prepared for a hands-on, interactive and reflective workshop, as well as the chance to connect with fellow innovators and design thinkers.
