An often stated Japanese proverb is that “the nail that sticks up gets hammered down”. As a Japanese American it's been interesting to reflect on how culture, nurture and nature can shape the personal decisions we make in our careers. Establishing design in tech centric companies can also present challenges depending on the culture and nature of the company. Rochelle will talk about lessons learned on the journey of establishing design teams - and the delicate balance between fitting in vs finding strength in a unique voice.
Rochelle King is Global VP of Product Design and Insights at Spotify where she oversees the teams that are responsible for product experience of Spotify as well the data scientists and user research teams that help Spotify understand its user needs and product performance. Prior to Spotify, Rochelle was VP of User Experience and Product Services at Netflix where she oversaw the Design, Enhanced Content, Content Marketing and Localization organizations at Netflix. She’s a member of the Board of Directors for The Center for Justice & Accountability and has just joined the Advisory Board for the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline. Rochelle is currently working on the book “Designing with Data” to be published by O’Reilly Media in 2017.
