Panther, with a stop at Giant Ledge along the way, has long been one of our favorite hikes—an opinion shared by many, as this hike has become one of the most popular within three hours of NYC, leading to crowded trails and parking lots. We’ll bypass the crowds and still see the amazing viewpoints and magical spruce fir forest cloaking the summit of Panther by taking a different trail, one we will almost certainly have to ourselves. Though we bypass Giant Ledge, the incredible extended time in the evergreen forest and the lack of crowds on our approach to the summit make this an amazing hike.
Required Catskill 3500 Winter Peak
Bonus: endless magical conifer forest
Though a popular destination, few hikers on Giant Ledge explore beyond the three or four well-known viewpoints on the way to Panther. Our route skirts the main approach as much as possible and explores the lesser known viewpoints that dot the expansive ledge. We’ll also travel below the ledges for a perspective on the cliffs that comprise the ledges—the view from below with blow your mind.
