Pub Crawl to Historic Detroit Drinking Establishments

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR RSVPS SO THAT WE HAVE AN ACCURATE COUNT!

We will begin the Pub Crawl at Foran's Grand Trunk Pub with a short talk about the brewery history around the Eastern Market Area with the Grand Trunk Western Rail-line and the fact that Foran's Grand Trunk Pub was the form ticket office of the railroad given by Stephen Johnson, a Sales and Marketing Professor at Macomb Community College, Consultant at EDGE Marketing & Communications and President & Founder of Motor City Tour Company, LLC, which provides year-round guided bus, bike & walking tours to breweries and beer festivals in Michigan under the names Motor City Brew Tours and Motor City Bike & Brew Tours.

We are still finalizing all of the stops but this is the tentative schedule:

7:00 – 8:30 (Speaker Stephen Johnson @ 7:45):

A. Foran's Irish Pub, 612 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48226

8:45 – 10:00:

B. Jacoby's German Biergarten, 624 Brush St, Detroit, MI 48226

**Between Stops B and C people can utilize the People Mover instead of walking for $.75. Pick up the People Mover at the Bricktown Station, which is on Brush Street between Congress and Fort Street. Exit at the Grand Circus Station on Woodward.

10:15 – 11:30:

C. The Dirty Trick Detroit, 2001 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI[masked]

11:45 – 2:00:

D. The Town Pump Tavern, 100 W Montcalm St, Detroit, MI 48201

E. The Centaur, 2233 Park Ave, Detroit, MI 48201

People can go back and forth between Town Pump and Centaur.

We will be doing the pub crawl on foot but people interested in using The Detroit Bus Company for travel from/to Royal Oak/Ferndale to/from Detroit please RSVP to the Bus to Pub Crawl meetup to use The Detroit Bus Company.

Pubs and the like have been at the core of Detroit's social being since the city's inception. When the French landed on the banks of the Detroit River in the early 17th century, they brought their love of alcohol with them. The French opened their homes to the community to share in their love of fine food and drink, but it was the British that brought the public drinking establishment to Detroit. Detroit bars started off as taverns for local residents. As Detroit became a travel destination in the 19th century, the business community shifted its focus from serving residents to serving visitors. During this time hotel bars took over as the primary host of civic affairs. By the turn of the 20th century the saloon era had taken over the city and there were over 1,400 bars in Detroit, which is about one bar for every 70 men over the age of 20. When Detroit was at its apex, the Detroit bar scene evolved further. Riding on the coattails of the jazz scene cabaret style clubs started springing up and brought elaborate floor shows and big name entertainers to Detroit. These venues eventually gave birth to the cocktail lounges of later years.

Whether it was an elegant hotel bar where the city's elite would wheel and deal, or a neighborhood saloon where the city's various immigrant populations socialized, Detroit had a bar for everyone. That tradition still holds true today and we are going to sample some of Detroit’s more historic bars!

This was a great idea. We arrived late and missed the speaker unfortunatly, and wished he would have followed us to each location to tell us the history for each separately. Also, we took a side trip after the second bar to R.U.B. BBQ and were surprised at their good variety of beers. Went to all the stops except the last one, just too tired too continue.

If it rains.... well that's what those little umbrella thingies in your drinks are for.

    September 8, 2012

  • Donna

Just looked at the weather channel, its only a very small chance of rain, so I really don't think it'll be an issue

    September 8, 2012

  • Donna

Matt and I will definitely be there. Looking forward to it. But, what's the plan if it rains? Also, I heard some of the bars are kinda far from each other.

Love this idea. My dad was a U.S. Congressman in the 40's and 50's from the old 1st District which ran from Belle Isle through the city back then. His office was on Chene. I was born in '48 and when I was little and cute he'd take me campaigning at the bars in Hamtramck because that's where the people were- no TV, no internet, just bars. He loved his boilermakers, hated the Purple Gang, and Joe McCarthy hated him. Good times.

I'm sorry I won't be able to go to the pub crawl but I would like to also recommend Nancy Whiskeys it opened in 1902. The owners are great people. If you want any more information on it please let me know.

Hi Everyone. So sorry I joined and haven't participated but that will changed. Have spent my summer recovering from tendonitis in my right wrist and thumb. Am doing much better and will be at an event soon. I'm a Detroit booster and local history lover so this group sounds like its right for me. See you all soon. Penny

I am finalizing the speaker and venues for the pub crawl and will post within the next week. We will be using The Detroit Bus Company for travel from Royal Oak and Ferndale for people who are interested in it. I am also changing the start time of the event to 7 pm.

Paul - The Detroit Bus Company will work for you to get down to the City and back. I am in contact with them and Night Move to determine what option will work best for our group to utilize. Once we are downtown the crawl itself will be walking. The Living Social deal is a good deal!

Might I suggest Vivio's? It is right in the middle of Eastern Market. They have an upstairs. Just a thought. 28th is better for me.

July 14th and 28th both work for me as well.

For logistical purposes of getting around downtown, it's probably worth mentioning that the Tigers are at home on July 21, August 18, and August 25. And, there's a concert at Ford Field August 18 as well. Maybe add July 14 and 28 to list of potential dates?
