• Our road to chef-alfresco v1.0
Announcing our Speaker Enzo Rivello from Alfresco. Food will be served from 6pm with talks starting at 6.30pm. What would you do if you inherit a huge, legacy monolithic chef cookbook, with very little documentation and a lot of weak parts? Do you decide to rewrite everything from the scratch or to bring this code to modern implementations? This is a talk about how new technologies, best practices and optimal workflow can (and in most cases need to) be entwined to finally deliver our final product: chef-alfresco v1.0 Enzo is a long-time Italian expat in London who started first as Ruby programmer then later decided to extend his skill set into Ops and Automation. Ex Playstation DevOps, currentlyDevOps/Tech Leader the Activiti and Automation team, his main focus is to help his colleagues to establish workflows and pipeline for continuous integration and delivery. Thank you to our sponsors Chef for providing the food and drink.

  • Joining the dots - Christmas social!
Why have one group meet up when you can have seven! We will be bringing together the Tech & Digital communities across seven groups for a Christmas mash up event. The events including startups, freelancers, Big Data, 3D's - Design Disrupt Do, Google developers and a few more. Meet up, have a drink and meet someone new. Announcing our first speaker: Amanda Baker sharing her story…… I’ve been pedal to the metal since the age of 13 with no intention of stopping. EVER. I launched my first business in 2014 – it failed. But it’s ok. It taught me how to survive in a world OBSESSED with innovation & transformation. This failure gravitated me towards a brand strategy consultancy where I spent a year as a sponge. A pink sponge. That experience challenged the way I looked at the world. It made me see & look at businesses differently – cutting through the noise of disruption & innovation. It was a game-changing move in my life that made me feel like I could run any business in any professional space. So I tried it. I failed again. Shame. Anyway… I now think it’s a good time to share my ‘fuck ups’ with the world. Not in a negative way. But in a positive way. Without them, I wouldn’t have this story. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Without them, I wouldn’t be thinking & planning, ‘WHAT’S NEXT?’.

  • DevOps Meet Up
Announcing our first speaker: Simon Fisher from Chef - Learning from Configuration Management This talk is an in-depth look at all we have learned and what we love about Chef, configuration management, and DevOps. We'll explore the pain points that still exist, especially as teams try to bring containers and microservices into production. We’ll then explore how with Habitat, the apps you build, deploy, and manage behave consistently in any runtime — metal, VMs, containers, and PaaS. You'll spend less time on the environment and more time building features. Bio Simon is a Solutions Architect at Chef. Having started off his IT career in development, he has spent the last few of those years helping people improve their DevOps practices through the use of automation. In his spare time he runs a website for people with Type 1 Diabetes in Ruby on Rails. Our second speaker - Gustav Maskowitz talking - Technologies from the future: Kubernetes and Dataflow Kubernetes let's you orchestrate Docker containers in a way that hides all the mundane non-app specific infrastructure from you. Use it to scale like Google and do devops in a way where Devs DEV and Ops OPS. Dataflow (open source Apache BEAM) is a project that completely flips the whole map-reduce way of processing data. Process streams of data as well as batches like they are the same thing. These two technologies have been running internally at Google for years and enabled huge scale. Now they are effectively free and open for all of us to use.

  • Meet up and talk Dev Ops
5 Tips for DevOps success - presented by Sven Erik Knop, Perforce Software Doing” DevOps can sound intimidating, but does it have to be? DevOps looks hard because it affects a lot of teams, could involve new tooling, seems the opposite of a lot of established processes, could take a long time to set up when you’ve got real work to do… Plenty of arguments against but don’t lose sight of the potential benefits: faster releases, lower risk, higher quality, better customer satisfaction, more room for innovation and much more. So, what can you do quickly and cheaply to get started and get benefit? We’ll discuss 5 key topics for DevOps success and set out pointers to get you started. Sven is a Product Marketing Manager at Perforce Software . He was previously a Lead Consultant for Perforce specializing in and implementing and improving Perforce installations. He has a strong background in database administration and development in C++, Java and Python. He has presented at Perforce User Conferences since 2009 on various topics, as well as at tradeshows and conferences. DevOps KungFu - presented by Joe Gardiner, Chef His talk starts with a simple question - what is DevOps? As DevOps becomes a commonly used term, how do we understand it and its impact on businesses? Who owns the definition, and how do you know someone ‘does' DevOps? I’ll talk about my experiences discussing DevOps with various business roles, and talk about what DevOps means to me, and to Chef Bio Joe is a Solutions Architect at Chef Software. He has previously worked as a Cloud Architect and Product Manager at companies such as Rackspace. He is a DevOps advocate and strong believer that DevOps is not only a pursuit for techs. Joe volunteers as a STEM Ambassador to promote the importance of science, technology, engineering, and maths education in schools. He lives in Reading with his wife and two young sons.
