Virtual Museum Network Amsterdam Meetup

This Meetup will explore the role of storytelling in the museum; examining and comparing the approaches used in traditional exhibitions with the approaches used in Virtual Museum applications.

Museums often use stories or narratives to share contextualizing information about objects with visitors, but how is technology changing this? What are the possibilities for storytelling using technology that may not be feasible using traditional methods? How do the approaches to storytelling differ between traditional exhibitions and virtual applications? How can traditional approaches to storytelling impact the approaches used in VM development, and vice versa? Is it possible to create a museum experience that integrates the storytelling between VM and a traditional exhibition to create a single, cohesive, yet dynamic, museum experience? This Meetup will consider these and other questions related to narratives, presentation and technology in the museum.

The focus of our discussion will be on on-site Virtual Museum applications, with discussions on mobile and online VM to come later. To facilitate the discussion, we will use examples from the Scheepvaartmuseum (http://www.hetscheepvaartmuseum.nl/) and the Amsterdam Museum (http://www.amsterdammuseum.nl/), however, for the purposes of the discussion, it will be useful to have experienced these museums prior to the Meetup.
