More Bang 4 Your Buck: Mongolian Dinner at Altai!

As I was debating just what sort of cuisine would be fun for our next dinner, it occurred to me it's been three years since our last visit to a Mongolian grill... So I decided it was time to fix that!

There are three Mongolian grill chains here in St Louis, and to be honest, they're all good.  But only one can actually claim to be based in Mongolia! Altai's logo says "since 1206", which was actually the consolidation of the Mongolian Empire by Genghis Khan. Even so, Altai has an impressive pedigree; they opened their first restaurant in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia in 2006, on the 800th anniversary of the country. So yeah, technically, this is a chain, but since our local location is the only location of Altai outside of Asia, I think we can safely overlook that detail.

Cuisine - If you're not familiar with the Mongolian Grill concept, it's simple. You are given a bowl in which you put your own section of meat (beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, scallops, etc., plus tofu for the vegetarians), veggies (you name it - broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, zucchini, onions, peppers, celery, and a dozen others), and noodles (several varieties), along with spices and sauces. You then take the bowl to the chef, who cooks it on a huge grill, and serves it back to you! Where Altai shines compared to the competition is in the authenticity of their sauces and spices; they have a good dozen spices available, as well as around twenty difference sauces that you can combine in almost infinite combinations - including a number of sauces you won't see anywhere else. In addition, your meal includes a choice of side dishes, soup, salad, and dessert - essentially everything but your drink!  To make your choices easier, they categorize their sauces from mild to spicy, and include a number of "recipes" so you don't have to be an expert to come up with something tasty - and you can even sample the sauces. And believe me, it's easy to come up with some incredible feasts!

Cost - Here's the other thing about this cuisine that makes it such a great deal.  Your complete dinner... and did I mention it's all you can eat, so you can make yourself several bowls with completely different combinations of meat, veggies, and sauces if you like... costs a whopping $13.99!  And that includes - again, unlimited - sides, soup, salad, and dessert!  If that's not a whole lot of bang for the buck, I don't know what is.

Other Info - The restaurant is located on the southwest corner of Manchester and Rock Hill Rd (McKnight Rd), in the Market at McKnight center.  It's right on the corner so you can't miss it.  Tons of free parking.

Note: While the dinner is largely self-paced, it still has to be cooked by their cooks and there are only a couple of them.  So in order not to get wildly backed up, you can arrive starting at 6:30; feel free to spread out your arrivals between 6:30 and 7:00 or so.  That way you can go ahead and get started when you arrive, and we won't descend on them like a Mongol horde (LOL) all at the same time!

I'll be looking forward to seeing lots of my hungry foodies at Altai Mongolian Grill on Monday the 23rd!
