PHO THANH HUONG - Casual Friday Dinner

This was perhaps the most I have researched on-line for a D & V event and the hardest decision as well. There are SO many places to get good Pho in town now, but this place has Bahn Mi sandwiches as well, so it wins. Other places were Pho Saigon 8, Pho So1, Pho Kim Long, Lemongrass Cafe, Viet Bistro and on, and on. They all had ratings over 85% on Urbanspoon and 3.5 to 4 stars on Yelp. This place is also seemed the most casual and therefore I won't be making reservations or charging a deposit. Your loss if you flake out at the end!

What is bánh mi you ask? Well, bánh mì is a Vietnamese term for all kinds of bread. Bread, or more specifically the baguette, was introduced by the French during its colonial period. However, a bánh mì is actually Vietnamese sub sandwich, bánh mì is not enough to describe the type of meat-filled baguettes. Therefore, additional words are added to describe the kind of fillings. For example, bánh mì xíu mại means a baguette with crushed pork meatball, bánh mì pâté chả thịt means a baguette or sandwich with pâté, Vietnamese sausage and meat, usually pork bellies, since it is the most common kind of meat.

So what is Pho then? Pho is dish consisting of broth, noodles made from rice, a few herbs, and meat. The two main varieties are chicken pho and beef pho. There is also Saigon-style pho (sweetened) and Hanoi-style pho (no sugar). The word "pho" may be derived from French pot-au-feu(beef stew). Pho originated in the early 20th century in northern Vietnam, apparently southeast of Hanoi. The variations in meat, broth and additional garnishes, such as lime, bean sprouts, ngò gai (culantro), húng quế (Thai/Asian basil), and tương(bean sauce/hoisin sauce) appear to be innovations introduced in the south. Pho did not become popular in South Vietnam until 1954.

The pictures of the menu give you am idea of what is available and how ridiculously inexpensive this meal is going to be. They also have spring rolls and egg rolls to boot.

As I mentioned, the place looks pretty casual so I hope to be able to pull a few tables together as we all arrive. I will be stopping in there this week to give them a heads up that we are coming so they are prepared for us. Even though this is a casual affair without any deposit, I do expect you to RSVP with integrity. Things come up for sure and even have with us, but changing your RSVP four or five times, two days before the event is just silly (yes, this really happened).

I am looking forward to this event with all my friends from Dining & Vining! See you soon!

Cheers -

Kelly & Davita

Kelly & Davita: I'm sorry to tell you that I just realized I forgot to bring your Christmas book with me today. It's still sitting on the counter... I guess that means we'll have to see you again soon after this event :-)
