What we're about

Welcome
Discover London is all about guided history walks and fun events around London. I've been leading history guided walks for the past 4 years and enjoy sharing London’s incredible history, secrets and hidden gems. The aim is to enjoy history in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Most people come on their own and others are totally new to Meetup. You will receive a warm welcome so don't be shy!
Signing up for events
If you want to attend an event, click on the 'attend' button. If the event is full then you can join the waiting list. As soon as a spot becomes available, you will then receive a notification that you are now on the 'going' list.
Change of plans
If for some reason your plans change and you can longer attend, please change your RSVP to not going. This will give someone else the chance to attend in your place. If a member doesn't show up without changing their RSVP on three occasions within a six month period then they will be removed from the group. This is a courtesy to other members.
Health and safety
The aim of the group is to enjoy the events with a friendly group of people. However, every member (and guest) is responsible for their own safety, welfare and health during an event in accordance with Meetup.com terms and conditions which states that members attend all meetups at their own risk and cannot hold Meetup.com or its organisers and other members liable for damages. By signing up to an event, you are agreeing to these terms above. Thank you.

Spectacular ceremony dating back 500 years: Cart Marking

Needs a location

£5.00

In this fun event, we're going to witness a weird and wonderful ceremony full of spectacle and charm. The tradition of 'Cart Marking' dates back 500 years and is carried out by The Worshipful Company of Carmen. There is simply no other event like it anywhere in the world.

You will have the chance to see a fine collection of vehicles from ancient to modern, handcarts, horses and carts, steam-driven vehicles to electric, solar-powered and hydrogen vehicles along with robes, hats and other regalia.

What is cart marking? A 'cart', in today's terms, is a vehicle used to transport freight or passengers, for 'hire or reward'. Marking is done by branding (or burning) a number, letter or symbol on to a wooden surface which is attached to the 'cart'. This was the earliest form of vehicle licensing.

We'll also talk about the history of the Livery Companies and look at the Halls of two of the top five rated guilds. How are they rated? Who was the mysterious maiden? How did the saying 'at sixes and sevens' originate? All will be revealed.

Afterwards we'll head over to the sixth floor viewing gallery overlooking St Paul's where we can get a cheeky drink from the roof top bar or sit and have a sandwich in the public space. A beautiful way to end the event with stunning views of the City.

So please join me for a great morning in the City with this friendly group.
