Diving into Story Sunday Writing Workshop - Postcard Stories - 16 December, 2018
“...the writer’s experience of the world made small and large at the same time.” Abigail Beckel and Kathleen Rooney This "Diving into Story" workshop, held once again in the lovely space in the Tree of Life, will focus on the very, very short story, whether fiction or non-fiction. In previous workshops many participants have written complete short pieces, but I'll take a closer look at this form in this workshop. No writing experience necessary! Flash (also known as micro fiction, postcard stories, short shorts, sudden stories, prose poems) is the art of brevity taken to an extreme, where not only every word counts but every comma and every line break: a complete story in under 1000 words and preferably less. While very short stories have been around for decades (possibly starting with Heraclitus!) —Chekov, Hemingway, Carver and other luminaries have written flash—the genre’s popularity is taking off, perhaps because a flash story can fit onto a cellphone screen, and can penetrate the tiny cracks in our increasingly hectic lifestyles. This workshop will cover the what, why and how of postcard and flash stories, and give you tips on the numerous publications and contests that are looking for these short shorts. “A good flash is so condensed that it borderlines poetry. A good flash engages your mind not only for the short duration of its read, but for a long time after.” ~Vestal Review New participants always welcome, although numbers are limited to ensure individual attention. What to bring: There will be tea and biscuits provided during a break, and please bring pen(s) and paper or a notebook. Please also bring a few sheets of plain A4 and something to press on! Cost/Venue: Tree of Life,[masked] Portland Rd, Hove BN3 5QJ. The cost for each workshop is £27, and to book a spot you can pay via here by making a RSVP on Meetup and paying via Paypal or, if you prefer you can make a bank transfer. Contact me at [masked] for details. My experience: I have coached writers and led writing retreats in Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S.A. I taught creative writing at The Galle Literary Festival, Sri Lanka and for the British Council in Colombo. My own work is widely published in a variety of literary magazines and has won a number of awards. You can find out more about me on my website: http://www.sandrajensen.net

What we're about

Diving into Story - a monthly series of writing workshops

We all have a story to tell, and our stories matter. Stories give us the chance to be heard, stories help us find out who we really are; stories connect us to others and perhaps stories help the world become whole.

We don’t always consciously know what stories we have within us to write, and even if we do, we often avoid actually putting pen to paper. Sitting down to a blank page is a dive into the unknown, a dive that takes great courage. We seek safety by putting on our ‘editor’s cap’ too soon, or by waiting for inspiration before we start writing. If we focus on what our story is going to be about, whether the writing will be good enough, or whether anyone will want (or not want) to read it, we stymie the creative process.

These monthly three-hour workshops will support you to discover the exhilaration and power of writing without preconceived ideas about what you should be writing or how you should be writing it, a thrilling and sometimes life-changing experience.

Your stories may be inspired from personal life, your intuition or your imagination, it does not matter: you will be encouraged to step out of your own way and open up your ‘child eyes’ to whatever wants to be expressed on the page. The focus of the workshops will be how to stop thinking about writing and to actually write, and how to keep writing...

“Though none of us will live forever, our stories can. As long as one soul remains who can tell the story, the greater forces of love, mercy, generosity, and strength are continuously called into the world."
~ Clarissa Pinkola Estés

Workshop Details: The events will be held monthly, and are limited to 12 participants. Although each workshop will go 'deeper' and build on the previous workshop, new participants are always welcome. (Note that most participants in these workshops don't book via Meetup, so even if there are no 'attendees' listed, they still run!)

What to bring: There will be tea and biscuits provided during a break, and please bring pen(s) and paper.

Cost/Venue: Workshops will be held at the Tree of Life, a lovely quiet space at 143-145 Portland Rd, Hove BN3 5QJ. The cost for each 3 hour workshop is £27, for the two hour ones it is £18 and to book a spot you can pay via Paypal or bank transfer. Contact me for details.

Participants will also gather informally outside of these workshops for writerly support and encouragement.
