The next Docker Edinburgh Meetup will be on Thursday 19 March, hosted at the CodeBase event space, in Lady Lawson Street, from around 18h30 to 20h00, with further discussion afterwards in the pub! Cloudsoft (http://www.cloudsoftcorp.com/) will be sponsoring the meetup, and pizza and beer will be provided. The topic for the night is the Docker Ecosystem, including Docker Engine itself, SDN and networking extensions, and tools like Powerstrip (https://github.com/clusterhq/powerstrip).
This event will be slightly different to previous Meetups. We only have a single speaker and a short demonstration, whivh will be followed by an open discussion that we hope everyone will continue informally after the event. Please let us know what sort of speakers or topics you would like to see at future Meetups, or if there are alternative formats like lightning talks that would prefer. And of course, tell us if you want to present something interesting about Docker or the wider DevOps community.!
Peter White from Metaswitch (http://www.metaswitch.com/) will be talking about Project Calico (http://www.projectcalico.org/), a software-defined network implementation that can be used with both Docker containers and virtual machines. It provides a simple and robust way of routing between containers using standard IP routing, and has a powerful and flexible access control model. Andrew Kennedy from Cloudsoft will also be demostrating how Clocker (http://clocker.io/) can automatically orchestrate the deployment and management of a Docker Cloud using Calico as the SDN provider.
With version 1.5 (https://groups.google.com/d/msg/docker-dev/nzKREJKqxe4/nsc9tkTLkccJ) just around the corner, and plenty of new features added in 1.3 and improved in 1.4, the Docker Engine has changed a lot since the last Meetup. Adrian and myself attended the DockerCon Europe event in December and heard the annoucements about Swarm, Compose and Machine there, and we have also been communicating with the Docker team about future proposals, such as networking extensions.
There will be time available at this meetup for a short discussion, led by Adrian and myself, covering how the Docker landcape is changing and growing, and the future direction of both the Docker Engine itself, and Docker clients and extensions. This will be continued at one of the local pubs in the Grassmarket, to allow everyone to have their say about the Docker ecosystem.
18h30 - Pizza and beer (thanks, Cloudsoft)
19h00 - Peter White, Project Calico Software-Defined Networking and Docker
19h30 - Andrew Kennedy, Demo of Clocker orchestration of Docker and Calico
19h45 - Open discussion, Docker ecosystem developments and future direction
20h00 - Discussion continues at an appropriate external venue...
Look forward to seeing everyone there!
