Docker 5th Birthday - Workshops and Kubernetes for Developers
Join us in celebrating the Docker Project’s 5th birthday! Plus, special guest Troy Connor will go over Docker's new Kubernetes features in Docker for Mac/Win!
Every year in March, we celebrate Docker’s birthday with a series of hands-on labs! Many labs to choose from! Advanced Docker users are invited to get involved on-site and act as mentors. Come learn, mentor, celebrate, eat cake, and take an epic #dockerselfie!
Bring your laptops for labs!
Issuetrak is our sponsor this week! They will be providing the venue as well as tacos and drinks for the event.
Docker Birthday #5 Hands-on Labs include:
Docker 101 for Linux users
Docker 101 for Windows users
Kubernetes on Docker for Mac and Docker for Windows
Modernizing Traditional Java Apps
Modernizing Traditional .NET / Windows Apps
Deploying Multi-OS applications with Docker EE
No need to install anything ahead of these events, we'll be using Play with Docker (PWD), a Docker playground which allows users to run Docker commands in a matter of seconds. It gives the experience of having a free Alpine Linux Virtual Machine in browser, where you can build and run Docker containers and even create clusters. In addition to the playground, PWD also includes a training site composed of a large set of Docker labs and quizzes from beginner to advanced level available at training.play-with-docker.com.
If following the Kubernetes on Docker for Mac and Docker for Windows, you’ll need to install Docker for Mac or Docker for Windows, depending on your operating system.
6:00 pm Networking and Food
6:30 pm New Kubernetes In Docker for Mac/Win
7:15 pm Labs
Troy Connor - Cloudreach (Cloud Software Engineer)

Bret Fisher, Community Leader
Come Learn via DIY Labs on things like Enterprise Edition, Windows Containers, Hybrid Clusters (Windows and Linux as one Swarm) and more. No presentations, but we'll have food and others to help you get started and un-stuck.
17.09 is about to be released but no big new features expected, just more refinements... so we'll focus on Labs and helping you Dockerize all the things.
There's a new lab here you'll be able to try: https://github.com/mikegcoleman/hybrid-workshop
As well as play-with docker: http://training.play-with-docker.com/
Docker has released their quarterly Stable release as 17.06, and Bret will go through all the new features and buttery smoothness of Docker + Compose + Swarm for the full Dev-to-Prod lifecycle.
6:00 pm: doors open and food arrives
6:30 pm: Bret starts talking :/

Join us in celebrating the Docker Project’s 4th birthday! Note the earlier time below!
To celebrate together and warmly welcome newcomers into our community, we will provide Docker labs and courses to learn about Docker in a fun and inviting way.
Are you an advanced user? We strongly encourage Docker users of all skill levels to attend! We need a network of mentors who understand the Docker platform to answer any questions that attendees working through the courses and labs may have. We also have some fun projects you can work on. Click here (https://community.docker.com/entities/4939/registrations) to sign up as a mentor.
Hampton Roads Bonus! If there is enough interest, Bret will be delivering an Orchestration Workshop from 6:30-8:30. Let us know in Meetup page comments.
5:30 - Doors Open, Food Arrives
6:00 - Welcome message, presentation of Docker
6:15 - 8:30 - Self-Paced Labs / Workshop
8:30 - Cake and Socializing!
Attendees will break into groups (at different tables) and participate in a lab or challenge of their choosing.
Bret Fisher will give a presentation and demo on the features and uses of Docker[masked], Docker's newest release this month.
So much great stuff you'll come away thinking "why haven't I deployed Swarm"?
Food, drinks, and location are sponsored by Issuetrak!
SPECIAL GUEST this month!
Docker Captain John Zaccone from Richmond's Docker Meetup will be joining us to show off using Jenkins with Docker for continuous building, testing, and deployment of docker images and containers. He will cover some best practices and caveats, including caveats of running Docker containers from a Docker container (DinD).
We'll provide food and drink at 6pm, with presentations starting at 6:30
Dan Luhring will get us started with a quick talk on his recent experience of using a Nginx container to setup SSL and port redirects.
Thanks to Issuetrak for being the best sponsor, providing us space, wifi, and dinner!
Join us before/after the event in our DockerHR slack channel: https://757dev.slack.com channel #docker
Even though we're having a meetup on Monday for ECS! Let's do a last-minute happy hour on Wednesday at Birch Bar in Norfolk with the 757dev family of meetups! You only need to RSVP on one of the meetups that's attending (Norfolk.js, Code4HR, GDG HR, etc.)
It's time again to get together for another Beer.js at The Birch Bar in Norfolk, VA. The birch has a food menu featuring amazing grilled cheese and pretzels, or pizzas can be purchased from the Chelsea Bakehouse next door. If you don't care for beer, there are other alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available.
Since it's December, this is a special holiday-themed event. Feel free to wear your best or worst holiday-themed gear and we have a few prizes to award to the most creative attendees.
