NETWORKING | INSPIRATION | TALKS | CELEBRATION

- MENU -

Lightning Talk 1 - The future of service composition - ComposeCD

Pini Reznik & Mark Coleman

Software is tending towards compositions of smaller functional units, or services. Existing tools don't really think this way. We propose a new way of thinking about service composition and testing, and an idea for a new tool: Compose-CD

Lightning Talk 2 - Project Calico: Docker networking on the internet model

Peter White

Multi-host networking is an open problem area in Docker, with various different approaches. Project Calico allows you to solve this problem using the same scalable (and simple!) network model as the general internet, but with full access control. In this talk, I'll summarise what that all means in practice, and why you should consider using Calico.

Lightning Talk 3 - Your software has memory but no memories

William Louth

Your software has memory but no memories. But what if software had the ability to recall and with it the ability to play out episodic (behavioral) memories time and time again in a different space – a simulated mirror world? What if software machines could see each other act, much like humans do, without the machine code needing to send a message or make a call? What if we created a matrix for the machine that allowed us to extend and augment software post-execution, irrespective of language, runtime and platform?

Lightning Talk 4 - A super-fast overview of Kubernetes principles!

Matt Feigal Cloud Platform Solutions Engineer at Google

You can find a playlist of the videos from the 1000 member event here:

A huge thank you to Bart Smith for lending us his camera and doing the editing and to Lukasz for filming on the evening itself.

The sound is a bit sketchy in places but we like the idea so we're going to look into doing this again in the future.

See you all on June 4th!

There is a problem with the video recording software. The duration of my talk is listed as 20 minutes. That can't be right, 12 minutes at best (or longest) :-).

I really enjoyed this meeting - it's good to see so much energy and enthusiasm together, and thanks everybody who made it so much fun!

Will the slides from the presentations be available online somewhere?

Everyone, I was sorry to have missed this one. Sounds like it was awesome.

Please note we *always* do deep technical talks (apart from when I speak) and last night was an experiment in shorter talks.

All good feedback. Glad you enjoyed it. Who won the raffle?

had to get used to the 'lightning' speed but.. for everything a first..

  • Luca M.

I think that talks were too short an not so technical, I expected something more.

Haha, ok. You should come back again then. This was a very different meetup. Normally we have three speakers, with more depth. You should come and check it out on June 4th.

      May 8, 2015

    • Luca M.

      Ok! I'll come :)

  • Erick S.

Great atmosphere. Nice to have time to interact with people between talks. Two minor points though:
    1) Standing in a SCRUM meeting takes 15 minutes, that's enough standing still for me. ;-).
    2) Perhaps add a rating to the talks concerning the technical depth so people can determine if they want to join.

Point 2 didn't really apply in this meetup since it was also a celebration. ;-)

We do however endeavour to keep it as mixed as possible given the constraints.

Lastly, last night was a special format for the birthday where we deliberately tried to make it very 'social'. In that respect I think we succeeded, but perhaps adding chairs to the equation would have removed the '15 minute stand up' feeling a bit... ;-)

Thanks to everyone for a memorable evening. Thanks to you, the crowd, to Mixtup for the venue, to GOTO, Container Solutions and Docker for the prizes and of course, to the speakers!

Kudos to Mark for organizing this and energizing the proceedings. Good talks and crowd.

A quick note about this evening.

    - There is no food so please grab something before hand
    - There's a bar but no free drinks so bring your pocket money
    - First lightning talk will start at ~19.30, competitions will run throughout!

Running a little late, hope to be there in little more than half an hour. Is it possible for me to just walk in?

Ok, venue is on the verge of being confirmed and I've limited the attendance to 100 in advance. There is a wait list though.

If you end up in the wait list, don't despair. We average 10-15% drop out rate approaching the event.

      And now you're in. :-)

    Morning!

After last night's lukewarm feedback session I drilled some people for their opinions and we ended up at this very rough idea.

    - 1 venue, no bar crawl
    - 4 lightning talks instead of 3 big talks
    - Lots of drinks

Any other ideas? XBOX on the big screen? Any ideas for cool venues?

    2 · April 17, 2015

Most of the descriptions are now in... looking good!

    April 24, 2015

  • Mark Robert C.

We're still working on the venue, but in the meantime the lightning talks filled up REAL fast.

Full details to follow but go ahead and check them out in the description above.

This is going to be a very interesting meetup!

If we get to 150 attendees, I think we'll add another lightning talk slot.

Went to look at a potential venue for this event and OH MY GOSH am I excited! I really hope this works out... more news as soon as I have it.
