Docs In Progress (http://www.docsinprogress.org) and Women in Film and Video-DC (WIFV) (http://www.wifv.org) have joined forces to co-present the WIFV/Docs In Progress Documentary Roundtable.
This program, usually held on the second Monday of every month (except this month!) builds on WIFV’s existing Documentary Roundtable speaker series and Docs In Progress’ filmmaker meet-up/support group formerly known as Documingles.
All Documentary Roundtable meetings are FREE and you do NOT need to be a WIFV member, Docs Insider, or alum of Docs In Progress to participate. This is a great way to get to know others in the DC-area documentary filmmaking community, build your network and know-how, and find out about other offerings of these two organizations.
So What's Happening Tonight?
We'll show selected clips from the Canadian film Capturing Reality: the Art of Documentary (http://films.nfb.ca/capturing-reality/) by Pepita Ferrari and use them as a springboard to discuss various topics in documentary filmmaking.
This film features interviews with many excellent documentary filmmakers, including Werner Herzog, Albert Maysles, Errol Morris, Jessica Yu, Jennifer Baichwal, and Laura Poitras. These filmmakers and many more share their insights into meeting the challenge of making documentary films.
We will discuss the existential questions of what is (and is not) a documentary, and where ideas come from. We will also hear from these accomplished filmmakers on the relationship of the director and the film subject, and on the art of the interview. Lastly, we will discuss some of the ethical issues of documentary film, including getting access and developing trust.
This will be a lively session and should promote a good discussion.
6:30-7:00 pm: Networking.
7:00: Program begins.
