What we're about
We're a group of academics (or academic-adjacents; teachers/etc. are welcome too!) who are looking for others to spend time working and writing with. That's it, just working. Chicago is enormous- you can find like-minded folks for just about anything you're looking for -- but somehow, not a whole lot for academic work. So here we are!
Initially created as a "dissertation support group", this is the place to be if you're doing any sort of academic work (researching, writing, grading papers, etc.) or just want some company while you study.
Let's meet once a month or so, chat/introduce ourselves for a little bit -- share our goals for the session & what we aim to accomplish before our next meeting, then celebrate victories (even the tiny ones) or share support/advice if you'd like -- and then, of course, get down to writing and working, as the focus of the group. Leave when you need to, but at least you made some progress that day. After, we rinse and repeat the following month. Sound good?
There aren't many ground rules, but there are a few important ones:
• Academics only. This group was created specifically for this population so we'd have our own support network. General coworking groups are great, but plentiful too.
• No solicitation or self-promotion/MLMs of any kind. Please do not use this group as a source for potential clients, in person or otherwise.
• Be respectful and do your best to be supportive. As academics, we are pros at complaining & procrastination, but please be kind towards your fellow academics. If I spent as much time on my dissertation as I have researching mental health in grad students (especially PhDs), I'd have written four of them by now. Be nice.
Feel free to use the discussion board or email lists to suggest ideas, places, times, even last-minute/drop-in writing sessions- whatever works. Let's get writing!
