Hi everyone, The Downland Art Society is an open and friendly club, based in the picturesque village of Walberton, near Arundel. Our aim is to encourage a love of art and provide an opportunity for everyone to recognise and develop their individual talents.

Since the darkest days of WWII, the Society has been a creative hub for the residents of West Sussex. Founded in 1944, it is still providing a forum for professional and amateur artists to come together through exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations and talks.

This group is sponsored by the Downland Art Society and is primarily for anyone interested in getting together to go sketching, drawing or painting in and around The South Downs National Park. If you enjoy visiting the South Downs and also enjoy painting and sketching you might like might like combine the two and spend a few hours out in the countryside doing something creative. It doesn't matter if you are an accomplished artist or a compete beginner you will be welcome. This is for people who want to draw or paint and meet fellow creatives.  It's not a class, and there is no formal tuition involved, but you can learn a lot from seeing what other have produced and sharing your ideas at the end of the day.

We intend to meet at different places in and around The South Downs National Park, both outdoors dependent on the weather or indoors at cafes or museums. At the location you are encouraged to sketch whatever interests you for a couple of hours or so. Afterwards we will get back together where we can share and discuss what we have produced, hopefully somewhere where we can get a cup of tea or coffee and possibly some cake! The intension is that this will be informal and non - judgemental where we can all learn from each other.

You will need your own art supplies, any medium suitable to the location is fine - basically paper and something that will make a mark on it will do!

As well as organising sketching meet ups, which are open to all, we are keen to promote the activities of The Downland Art Society. Whilst we are keen to encourage new members to join the society, there's no obligation to join the Society to belong to this group.

The Art Society has a website at if anyone is interested. The society's workshops and demonstrations are also open to non members, but please note that workshops are booked in advance. Please do come along it would be lovely to meet you. 🙂
