Last week I went on an epic factory tour throughout China along with Adam Craft, Dragon's VP of Manufacturing. Together with Dragon's Far East team, we visited half a dozen factories in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Shaoguan and got to see their circuit board production (SMT) areas, manual assembly lines, EDM and injection molding machines, compression molding machines, die casting machines, roto-molding machines, electroplating and painting areas, as well as many more mind-blowing manufacturing processes.
Perhaps one of the most valuable things that I learned during the trip though was simply how contract manufacturing works in general. In this talk, I'll discuss my experiences in China, give a practical explanation of how factories operate, and provide an overview of the various (ingenious) manufacturing processes that are used to mass produce today's products.
As usual, there will be pizza and beer, and we'll have time before and after to hang out. You are also strongly encouraged to bring any prototypes you've been working on so that the Dragon Team and our other attendees can discuss it with you and provide design and manufacturing feedback.
