Where the Crawdads Sing -- For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens. Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Karen Russell, Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

  • US Navy 33rd Bay Bridge Run/Walk

    Hilton San Diego Bayfront Garage

I really like this event! I first attended this event with Cynthia and Patty in 2017. The Coronado Bridge is officially closed on race day, allowing the runners/walkers to cross the bridge and end in a celebration at Tidelands Park! Once there, you are treated like a queen! There are food booths, music, you get a medal and a T-shirt and all kinds of free goodies! After that, you take a ferry across the bay back to the starting line! Along the way, you are serenaded at every mile (4 miles total) by a variety of musicians and bands (we were serenaded by a Navy Band, a Mariachi band and I can't remember what else!) If you would like to join me, please go to the website (runsignup.com/Race/CA/Coronado/NavysBayBridgeRun) to pay for race entry. The cost for senior participants is $43. We will be parking at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront hotel, so be prepared to chip in for parking and gas!
