Finding your way around the contrib jungle

Join us for another evening of Drupal Learning - on which we will be joined by Jeffrey A. "jam" McGuire, Manager of Community Affairs at Acquia.

Ever wondered ...
... where to find resources for learning Drupal and solving an issue with your site?
... where the drupal community is heading with all it's initiatives and changes?
... how to get involved to scratch your itch?
... where to put things when contributing to the community?

Tell us how you find your way around and find out what fellow Drupallers do. Whether you are an experienced Drupal users or a Newbie, this will be a great time to share your knowledge, ask questions and learn about the many resources available.

We look forward to seeing you!
Sally and Meike

Note - We will be in the Hub Westminster which means you will not be allowed into the building unless you are signed up for this meetup.

Doh! Thank you Robert (and the others who spotted this). It's Friday 27 July! http://groups.drupal.org/node/240843

I don't know why I said August. Maybe because I'm looking forward to DrupalCon Munich so much! :)

Really good night, and lots of interesting conversations. Thank you!

Hi Dave, shame you couldn't make it. We don't record any of the talks and there were no slides to share.

Thanks ladies as ever for organising this. I'm sorry I couldn't make it along.

Was Jeff's talk recorded and/or are slides available?

    June 28, 2012

  • James T

Friendly and informal, I definitely will be coming along to the next one, thanks!

This sounds very interesting. In our project I am using about 50 contrib modules, plus another 30 that I have written myself. Would like to share these, but not sure of the best way to go about this - particularly as some work will be required to make them sufficiently generic for others to use, and I am still on Drupal 6 (so I guess I'd also need to adapt them for Drupal 7 as necessary).

Thanks for the responses and reference suggestions. I am reading EJ's "Drupal User's Guide", along with Johan Falk's "Drupal 7 The Essentials" - both seem newby friendly publications. Acquia Drupal installed - also downloaded a couple of freebie Themes and installed - but not got yet got to grips with using Drupal or the peripheral apps properly - just hacking my way about at present. Now, thanks to the comments posted, very much looking forward to the meetup on the 27th... :-)

Hi Dig, could you man reception from 6pm?
And yes... this website is not exactly intuitive to navigate at times... ;)

    June 14, 2012

  • Meike

Hi Nigel, we have lots of beginners coming to the meetup and helping with understanding the basics is part of what we are meeting up for. It does help to have a little read about drupal before, Emma Jane's "Drupal User's Guide" is very good for the very first steps in Drupal and the free drupalize.me videos should get you started so things make a little more sense on the 27th.

Not out of place, I went to one meetup and the background was very mixed. Using lynda.com or maybe one of the more detailed training programmes like drupalize.com is an excellent idea, as is reading documentation on drupal.org and some of the Drupal books.

Hi, I am so new to Drupal. I like what I see but have little or no idea of what it - or I - am capable of. Developers at work pointed me in the Drupal direction. Pretty much everything is new to me - almost from the terminology to the technology. I have worked with code driven typesetting systems for many years and know a little Unix. CMS, SQL and PHP - I don't know at all. Am I going to feel completely out of place at this meetup? - if so.... maybe I should subscribe to Lynda.com ...

  • Dig

What time do I get onto reception so that we allow 60 to sign up?

PS Is it just me or is this website is really difficult to navigate...?

    June 13, 2012

  • Meike

Thanks Dig, that would be great!
Maximum with no representative is 29, with someone at the desk we can go up to 60. You would just need to mark the people who arrive on the list until we are down to 29 to arrive. Then we can hand it back to the reception.

    June 12, 2012

  • Dig

    Yes I could do that...
In theory, what is the maximum number of people allowed
    a) with no meetup representative on the desk?
    b) with a meetup representative on the desk?

I am happy to help get more visitors by standing at the registration desk. Pls let me know how it works... thanks

  • Meike

    Hi there,

we would like to open the registration up to more people, but that means our meetup needs to provide someone at the registration desk until we are down to 29 people left on the list. Would anyone of you be happy to help with that?

    Thanks. Sally and Meike
