Cassandra Developer Morning

Hi All,

The next meetup will be a FREE Cassandra Developer Morning on Saturday the 10th of August from 10am till 2pm. It will be in Dublin City Centre, exact location is TBD. Coffee will be provided to get us kickstarted. This will be run as a Techlabs event. The event is marked tentative but don't let that stop you RSVP'ing, I'll have the final details sorted by Monday.

During the 4 hours we will be working in teams of 4 or 5 and covering:

1. Things you need to know about Cassandra (30 min presentation)
2. Setting up a Cassandra instance/cluster
3. Discussion of common use cases
4. Designing a use case schema in CQL
5. Implementing a basic client in Java/Python/A N Other
6. Short presentation of each team's work to the group

The purpose of the day is to get people off the ground working with Cassandra from the development perspective and covering do's and don'ts. Absolute beginners are more than welcome and experts most definitely as you can share your experiences with the group.

Please read the terms and conditions before RSVP'ing.

1. We will be clustering instances on our own machines so you will need to bring a laptop (hopefully not from the 80s!)
2. Have your favourite IDE installed before the event
3. This will be a developer focused event, so if you aren't comfortable working in at least one programming language this isn't for you
4. The use cases and client programs will be simple but useful, you won't need to be a rocket scientist to implement them, and you will have support from myself and your team members.
5. Capping this event at 25 people so if interested don't wait around!! RSVP!

Thanks,

Niall.

P.S. Suggestions comments are always welcome.

Informative and practical. Great event as usual. Niall, thanks for organizing it and for sharing your C* expertise!

It was my first C* meetup and had a lot of questions. The presenter answered them well and I learned a lot. It was also nice to meet other Cassandra enthusiasts and learn from them.So in short, a great meetup.

It was really good. In my case I had no previous background in C* and after the meetup I have the concepts and material to start learning more on my own.

    Hi All,

If you are attending the developer morning this coming Saturday, here are a few tips to get you warmed up.

    1. We will be using DataStax community edition, the latest available version. This can be installed easily on most OS'. 2. Try downloading, installing and starting it sometime this week so you know your laptop can run it and you have java installed etc. 3. If you are hell bent on using a windows laptop, if you want to make life easier just download VirtualBox or VMWare and install an ubuntu image to use on the day. 4. Some teams will be working in Python and others in Java depending on the use case. Don't worry too much about your level with either language, but at least know what your laptop can run before you arrive as MAC and Linux users will have it easier.

Just mentioning the above as you don't want to spend Saturday trying to get java working on your OS as opposed to cassandra!

    See you then!

    Niall.
