• Dublin PubhD 38 - Cell Therapies, Computer Vision and TBD
Our 38th event will take place on the Wednesday 9th January 2019 from 7:00 pm downstairs in the J.T.Pim's (4 South Great Georges Street · Dublin 2). As usual, we will have up to three speakers explaining their research. Our line up for the evening is as follows: Karen English is a Research Fellow at Maynooth Univerity. Our immune system is hugely important in keeping us healthy. It protects us from infection by pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system is constantly on patrol surveying our bodies for the presence of foreign invaders. Although there are many control points present to stop the immune system when the pathogen has been cleared, in some cases, the immune response can be too strong and this can lead to damage to tissues/organs in the body. When this happens, the function of some organs can be reduced. For example, patients with inflammatory disorders such as pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma can find it very difficult to breathe. For many inflammatory diseases, there are no good treatments available and there is an urgent need to develop novel approaches to treat disease. I work with stem cells from the bone marrow (inside the bone!). She is interested in these cells as they can calm the immune system. Her lab is focused on understanding how these cells calm the immune system with a view to using these cells to treat inflammatory disease. Federico Magliani is a third year Ph.D. student at University of Parma, Italy and a visiting Ph.D. student in Dublin City University. His research is on image retrieval, a subtask of computer vision. The principal challenge of his work is to retrieve fastly and accurately images on big datasets (from 1M to 1B images), focusing also on mobile devices. Looking forward to seeing you all there. And as always, if you are interested in taking part in future events as a speaker, which usually take place on the first Wednesday of the month, please contact us at [masked]!
