World Environment Day with Catan: Oil Springs

A former member
I will be out of town for this but I thought I would email you all what Erik Assadourian sent to Mary and me. I've played the expansion before and it's definitely interesting.

This June 5th is World Environment Day—an annual celebration around the world of the Earth’s environment and a global day of action (). And as a gamer and environmentalist, I thought what better way to act than to organize a global meetup to play the new Settlers Scenario, Catan: Oil Springs. (http://www.oilsprings...)

If you haven’t heard of Catan: Oil Springs yet, I co-wrote this new eco-educational scenario to help facilitate conversations about environmental issues, like the tragedy of the commons, the limits to growth, and climate change. The scenario—a collaboration between Worldwatch Institute, Catan GmbH, Mayfair Games and Kosmos—adds oil to the island of Catan, enabling players to grow faster and bigger, including upgrading their cities into metropolises (worth 3 VPs and producing 3 resources). But every use of oil brings Catan closer to ecological ruin—causing pollution, coastal flooding, even the total submersion of the island if too much oil is used. Players can counteract this, however, by sequestering oil, taking it permanently out of production, and in the process earning victory points, and possibly even the honor of being the “Champion of the Environment.”

Since your based in the DC area (Worldwatch is actually right in Dupont), I do want to mention that there is already an event scheduled for the Koshland Science museum on June 5th in the Gallery Place area, so if you want to join that you can RSVP at http://www.koshland-s...[/url].
