Tag along with me and let's cycle Summer Streets, the annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space — our streets. If you're not familiar with Mayor Bloomberg's ongoing program, for three Saturdays each Summer nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are cleared of automobile traffic and opened for people to play, walk, bike, and breathe.
The route stretches from the Brooklyn Bridge up to 72nd Street and into Central Park, running along Park Avenue and numerous connecting streets. This event is part bike tour, part walking tour, part block party — a great time for exercise, people watching, or just enjoying the Summer morning. There will be many free activities and vendors along the route for us to stop and explore, including a rock climbing wall at Spring Street, zip lining at Foley Square, bike helmet giveaways at 51st Street, and much, much more.
Once we reach Central Park, we'll do a loop or two and head back along the Hudson River Greenway to our starting point.
The Important Stuff ...
This is going to be a casually-paced (8 - 10 mph) ride of about 25 miles roundtrip with many stops. Most of the ride will take place on car free streets and roadways but there will be parts with some automobile congestion. There will DEFINITELY be a lot of bicycle and and pedestrian traffic. You must be comfortable riding in a group and in traffic. Helmets are suggested. Make sure your bike is in good working order before the meetup and bring a lock in case we need to leave our cycles. Bring a patch repair kit, air pump, and spare inner tube. Rain cancels the meetup. Check your email the evening before you head out for last minute meetup updates as well as my mobile phone number which will be sent to those who RSVP. Please DO NOT RSVP if you do not seriously plan to attend as space is limited. No flakes allowed! If you RSVP and I notice that you have a number of no shows or have a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed. Sorry, no guests allowed for this one.
