I think that would be a bad idea���you should either change your
environment variable or symlink /usr/bin/ruby, /usr/bin/irb, etc., to
the newer version. There are a number of system scripts currently
referencing #!/usr/bin/ruby, but that is symlinked to
/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby.
So deleting things from that directory will almost certainly cause
system instability, but on the plus side there's absolutely no need to
do so.
