The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

  • Jul 13, 2013 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Rescheduled from July 6.

Meet Pat. Pat has a theory: his life is a movie produced by God. And his God-given mission is to become physically fit and emotionally literate, whereupon God will ensure a happy ending for him -- the return of his estranged wife Nikki. (It might not come as a surprise to learn that Pat has spent time in a mental health facility.) The problem is, Pat's now home, and everything feels off. No one will talk to him about Nikki; his beloved Philadelphia Eagles keep losing; he's being pursued by the deeply odd Tiffany; his new therapist seems to recommend adultery as a form of theraphy. Plus, he's being hunted by Kenny G!

In this enchanting novel, Matthew Quick takes us inside Pat's mind, showing us the world from his distorted yet endearing perspective. As the award-winning novelist Justin Cronin put it: "Tender, soulful, hilarious, and true, The Silver Linings Playbook is a wonderful debut."

I was really sorry to miss the meetup today but got the book and previously saw the movie so I will definitely read up. See you all at the next book club meeting

I loved it. Felt the characters were fleshed out, no superfluous story lines and the tone of the book didn't minimize mental illness, yet provided a flawed protagonist who wasn't scary a la Cuckoo's Nest. Thought provoking and I can't wait to see the movie now.

      Two things:
First, I literally shook an angry fist at the screen when I read your comment, Amy.
Second, I still feel like 4.99 is too rich for my blood. I'm looking for 1.99 or less, *maybe* 2.99 if it's a great book.

Just saw it and loved it! This will be the first time I have watched a movie before reading the book, should be interesting.

If you havent seen the movie yet, it's playing at the Univ Theatre at the Fairfax GMU campus for $2 on Tuesday nights. I think it's only $5 or $6 on all other nights. I really enjoyed the movie.
