50 Shades of Gray (EPyC Biweekly meetup)

Stuff happens. So check this page regularly to see if the event details have been revised, or if you need to update your RSVP. One thing hasn't changed though: it's still just AED 20 if you want to join us on the evening. With that out of the way, here's what we currently have slated for Tuesday:

Discussion Topic: 50 Shades of Gray (Jason Dalmeida)
Jason's promised us a fun event on black and white photography this week. I think this means you get to sue him for fraud if you don't leave with a smile on your face.* But if you've only set the saturation on your shots to zero and walked away, you have a lot to learn.

Jason will discuss the basics of black and white photography, so don't worry if you are a beginner. He will then go into what camera presets can do for you, tell you how to use colors and color filters, and finally give you a live demonstration of Lightroom, a pre-sharpener and Silver FX Pro.

Those of you who have taken classes with him already know he has a lot of knowledge to share, so don't miss the chance to hear him speak about a subject he is passionate about.

* Don't actually try this. Your lawyer will charge you a lot more than the cost of EPyC admission.

Mirrorless cameras vs. DSLRs (Fujifilm)
A short presentation so to help you learn about the differences.

Member showcase (Amgad Nady)
For this section, members show us 10 to 12 of their best shots, and answer questions about them. Want to try your hand at this in the future? Talk to an organizer.

The Tuesday tip (Ashraf Jandali)
Want advice on how to improve your photographs? Ashraf's here to help.

Photo Competition (Theme: Textures)
Please send us up to two of your images by email ([masked]) before 7 PM the night before the event. To make our lives easier, please rename the files so that they have your name in them, e.g. Ahmed1.JPG and Ahmed2.JPG. We all vote on who has done the best job, and the winner gets a prize. We will not accept photo submissions on the day. If you don't show up, your photo will also not be eligible for a prize.

We will be meeting in Studio Attitude in Al Quoz, in the same series of warehouses as Botanica. If you need help figuring out how to get there, check out the location map, or make use of the GPS coordinates [masked],[masked]). More information on the venue can be found on their site or at 04 3384114.

We also have YouTube videos showing you how to get there from Sheikh Zayed Road, with detailed text directions posted? This one shows the way if you are coming from the direction of the World Trade Centre and Dubai Mall, and this one depicts the way from the direction of Abu Dhabi, the marina, and Al Barsha.

You read all the way to the bottom! Congratulations!

Thanks everyone for liking my picture for the photo competition. 23 photographers voted for my picture as best in the 10 others submitted. It was very very encouraging.

Thank you Jason for the great session. I learnt a lot today about another aspect of photography that I always wondered about but didn't get to explore. I usually don't like editing photos and like to see them in their original form but now I am curious enough to try the soft wares only to see the effect but I would still go with the original.
Thanks once again for giving us your time and effort.

Tasneem... I appreciate your honest views... I strongly recommend you to hold on 2 your views and focus on improving your pictures in camera... post processing is supplementary and should be used to only tweak the originals if and when required. Lightroom is a good place to start... it is simple yet a powerful tool. Personally this is my stance as well to keep it close to its original state... thank you for coming :)

The pin shows where to park, then walk between the buildings - half way down on your right you'll find the studio. :) You'll know you in the right spot if you see 1000 Dunes Garage a friend of mine's shop.

Is entry limited to pictures captured at the photo walk in bur dubai?

    September 30, 2013

Nope! Any pictures of textures are welcome.

I'm sure it's just me, but I'm having trouble sorting out what should be submitted for "textures". A vague requirement is interesting, but some guidance might be helpful.

    September 30, 2013

You may find it useful to refer to the description of textures mentioned in our meetup on that subject. http://www.meetup.com...
