Bi-Weekly Photography Meetup. Theme: Portraiture

We would like to thank our new hosts, The Shelter, for offering us place to hold our biweekly meetings. The Shelter is located in Al Quoz's Alserkal Avenue, where parking is free. If you're making your way there by public transport, you can take bus 12 from the First Gulf Bank station.

Is this your first time at one of our biweekly events? Welcome - it's free of charge! For everyone else, we suggest donating a minimum of AED 10 to cover club costs.

Would you like to join us at the EPyC dinner on Tuesday, February 5? (Details here: http://www.meetup.com/EmiratesPhotoClub/events/99340092/) Bring AED 100 to this meeting to reserve your place.

Agenda:

19:00 Announcements

19:15 Discussion topic: Portraiture, featuring guest speaker Amit Guha Roy
This week we have a rather irreverent camera jockey who likes to take portraits. In between telling you how he shoots them as well as blatantly talking about his own work, he will regale you with tales about his own journey as a jailer of light and itinerant. To whet your appetite, here's a picture he took on his travels:

20:00 Break

20:15 Member showcase: Zaki-turina Qutteineh
For this section, members bring show us 10 to 12 of their best shots, and answer questions about them. Want to try your hand at this at a future session? Talk to an organizer.

20:30 The Tuesday tip: Ashraf Jandali dispenses advice on how to improve your photographs

20:45 Critique
Do you feel something is off with a picture you took, even though you can't tell what? Bring along the image, and our members will give you their suggestions on what you can improve. Constructive criticism is one of the best ways of improving your work!

21:00 Photo crimes
Even the best photographers make mistakes. Did you ever shoot a beautiful sunrise, only to find out you'd left your lens cap on? Tell us your stories so that we can laugh at your pictures and learn from your experiences.

21:15 Best edit competition
Use one of these input files:
JPG (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7654850...)
RAW (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7654850...)
You can do anything you'd like to modify the image. Bring your submission on a USB flash drive - sorry, no email entries. We all vote on who has done the best job, and the winner gets a prize.

For Amr, Shabnam, Zahid, Raju - few frames from the first Shelter meet up.........."Once the amateur's naive approach and humble willingness to learn fades away, the creative spirit of good photography dies with it. Every professional should remain in his or her heart an amateur" - Alfred EISENSTAEDT. I loved the spirit of this Meet Up. Thanks all!!!

Thank you for organizing it so well. The new location is great, I really hope this is permanent.
Amit's presentation was good help. I have just one suggestion for future meet ups. Since this club has members from all levels of photography, pros to the ones who just started, I feel that the really short session on several topics may be too much for the beginners. Can this be extended to 2-3 sessions? After every session everyone will have the opportunity to work on what they learnt in the session and will have the opportunity to discuss / share the same in the follow up session. The 2nd session on the same topic will actually make more sense to beginners who attended the first one.
Apart from that, can you share the soft copies of the presentations?

A pleasant evening in a gorgeous venue with a great turn out... Thanks to our Hosts The Shelter, to our guest speaker Amit Guha Roy who had an energetic, informative and a real crowd pleaser presentation, Zaki for his inspiring and eye-catching photos, to our great board members who made this a successful event, to everyone who shared his thoughts, ideas and photos...
The best edit entries was awesome and I really enjoyed it except the part when my laptop stopped responding! Congratulations to Yaser and Shirley for their successful photo edits...
If any member would like to share his knowledge, experience or even share his photos with the club at any of our future meetups please contact me or any other organizer.

The subject was well presented by (forgive me, I lost your name - is it Amit ? Please do inform). I cannot say how good a photographer you are (as I am just a beginner) but I do admire your confidence, indepth knowledge, people skills and spontaneity. Excellent.
