UPDATE: FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2013-6:30pm
THE EVENT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN DUE TO RAIN. All those who RSVPd, and some of you who haven't; we will go next Saturday, June 29, as per our rain date. Everything will be the same; time, picnic, etc., but one week from now. Sorry everyone- I was looking forward to this, but I don't want us not to have a good sunny day and a good time. See you all next week.
UPDATE: Wednesday, June 19, 11:15am-
INFORMATION FOR THIS SATURDAY'S EVENT-
I have called Demsis, which manages the rental of equipment in Gatineau Park, and they have told me that we cannot reserve our canoes/kayaks ahead of time. It's first come, first serve, so we should really be at the lake for 9am. They open at 8am, so I think we should be able to get a canoe/kayak for everyone from our group, but if we wait longer, then the chances grow slimmer. Please be sure to be on time.
We'll wait at the beach near the canoes for everyone to arrive, and we'll push off the shore at 9:30am.
ALSO: A credit card is needed for the rentals. If any of you do not have one, please get in touch with me as soon as possible, and I will try to arrange your rental to be put onto someone else's card, but please have your money ready to give to whoever will do this when you arrive. You should have $25 for this (if the canoe is split between 2 people then $25 will be the maximum you need if there are 3, it will be less).
Finally, there is an $11/vehicle fee to enter the park for the day. It would be best to carpool and split the fee between passengers as much as possible to avoid paying this fee many times over. Let's communicate on in the comments section regarding the carpooling. Also, please indicate what you plan to bring to eat for lunch, so we don't duplicate foods.
I will send out directions for how to get to Lac La Peche from downtown Ottawa today or tomorrow. See you all there!
Let's get together and meet for one of our rare purely social gatherings at the height of summer! This will be a magical day of canoeing on beautiful Lac La Peche, about 45 minutes from town.
We can spend the whole day paddling to our heart's content... There are islands, whispering pines, sandy stretches of shoreline, and clear, clean water to swim in. We can find some pleasant place and have a yummy shared picnic on the shore.
Canoes can be rented at the lake at a cost of $50 for the whole day (8 hrs.- taxes, 2 lifejackets and 2 paddles included). We can split that cost up into 2-3 people per canoe. They also have kayaks (single and tandem- $50 and $55/8 hrs.) for those who would prefer to take that option.
We will only go if it's warm and sunny, so we are sure to have a good time and enjoy the sun on our skin. In case of rain, we will do it the following weekend, on Saturday, June 29th. We will check the forecast at 6pm on Friday evening to make a decision on the weather.
We can carpool as usual, so post a notice if you need a ride, or if you can share your vehicle with someone that needs a ride in the comments section below.
* Also, please indicate what item(s) you can bring for the picnic, so that we don't duplicate anything and have a variety of foods.
Kids are most welcome (add them as guests to your RSVP).
I cannot wait!!!
GETTING THERE: For those of you who know how to get there, you can go ahead and meet us. For all others, I suggest we meet somewhere and drive in convoy to the lake so that no one gets lost. More on this closer to the date...
