Topic: What is a fact?

The topic, "What is a fact?", won the vote at our 8/6/2014 meeting in Concord.

I'd like to thank the members of our meetup group who are helping me to co-organize this cafe in Concord.

All members are encouraged to RSVP.

While there are some vending machines next to our meeting room, there will not be other food available, so I encourage you to bring your own food and beverage to the meeting room. There are a number of restaurants nearby, as well as a Peets Coffee & Tea.

There is a public parking garage next to the Plaza Tower that offers free parking, and the garage should have ample parking at the time of our meeting.

Please make sure to RSVP only if you are able to attend since RSVPs are limited. If you RSVP, but need to change your plans, please make sure to come back to the meetup site to change your RSVP (at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting) to provide others with an opportunity to RSVP for this meetup.

One of the members who is co-organizing this group with me will greet you in the lobby of the building and will escort / direct you to our meeting room. We meet on the first floor of the building. If you happen to arrive a little bit after 7 PM, look for philosophy cafe signs at the entrance of the building, which provide a telephone number you can call so that we can have someone come out to meet you. But, please try to come earlier than 7 PM.

We look forward to seeing you!

unfortunate i missed it. but was thinking about it all week. what is a fact.
i concluded whatever exists is factual. what can be seen, touched, moved, formed (the creation and the result) are fact. you cannot deny their existence.
war is fact, the ensuing death of human bodies is a fact.
taking a trip to the Andes, the Andes is a fact, the trip will be a fact and the ensuing events from the first step are as cause and effect, all facts. can you deny they exist?
the kindness that one being shows to another being.
the act happened it is a fact, the effect it had on the other human being is also factual; it did happen.
numbers exhibit facts arrived at by the factual numbers.
belief's become very borderline. the dogma is a fact, but...

Provocative topic. With more time, we probably could have dug down a few more layers.

Here is the resource I referred to briefly in last night's meeting: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/facts/

Another fascinating exploration of a multi-layered topic. Does E really equal MCsquared? And was it a fact before there was large agreement on it? It is indeed a worthy investigation.

it would be very helpful if before our meet-up, we can meat-up on new (to us, as individuals mayhaps, but old hat to others), knowledge and facts (which forever change due to man's consistent/insistent experiments and discoveries. i note that one meet-up member, bill, came with such sheet of info. this can help pointedly steer our discussion towards today's trend of thoughts/actions, not just from top of our heads which will be not unlike octopus arms flailing/groping every which direction . thank u.
