Here is what the tech support guy at WP emailed me:

At WPEngine we do create backups and restore points daily. We do not 
however, make copies of the wp-content folder so you will want to 
download a backup weekly or more often depending on how ? often you post. 


One thing I can is that we have a very optimized system, we service the 
website in a different structure and we stand out from many other hosts. So long as you're okay with a manually backing up your wp-content 
folder to your local computer, you'll always have a backup.
