Begin the day at Cavalier Heights Visitor Center at 9:00 am. Hike to the Murphy Farm Trail to the overlook, 3 miles roundtrip. Continue on another trail for 3 miles to lower town by way of the parkway through Virginius Island end up at the Point at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Both trails are moderate in difficulty with some elevation changes, some rough tread.
Bring a bag lunch or have a meal at one of the few eateries that are open this time of year in the lower town.
In the historic park following the hike enjoy natural scenery, park museums, exhibits, films, and bookstore, souveneir shops, and places to eat.
If you plan to hike and visit the park museums plan to spend the day at Harpers Ferry NHP. The park closes at 5:00 p.m.
A shuttle bus runs ever 20 minutes between lower town and Cavalier Heights VC.
Be sure to dress for the weather, wear comfortable, sturdy boots, and bring plenty of water and energy snacks.
There is more to do at Harpers Ferry NHP than a day will allow. We will have to plan another outing to hike to Mather Training Center (former Storer College campus and Camp Hill), hike the Ridge Trail, hike the Maryland Heights Trail. The Appalachian Trail is routed through Harpers Ferry NHP. Across the Potomac is the C & O Canal NHP (towpath).
Harpers Ferry NHP is a fee park. An entrance fee will be collected either at the entrance station or in the visitor center. The fee per car is $10.00. Passes also may be used including National Parks pass, Golden Access pass, senior pass, or the annual park pass. All passes can be purchased at the park.
In the case of hazardous weather the hike will be re-scheduled at a date to be determined.
