Grand Circuit of the Pentland Hills!
We’ll start at Swanston and make our way west along the path by the golf course, soon heading for the first climb of the day - Capelaw Hill. From there we’ll head south taking in Harbour Hill and Bell’s Hill before starting the ascent of Black Hill. Black Hill is an often neglected Hill, the hill itself is somewhat unremarkable, however the views it affords are splendid! The descent from Black Hill ends at Logan Cottage (between Loganlea and Glencorse reservoirs) From here we’ll head south towards Loganlea. Just after we reach the farmhouse at the end of Loganlea reservoir we’ll start our next ascent to the bealach between East Kip and Scald Law. This is a grassy path traversing the southern slopes of Scald Law - this route can be particularly slippery in wet conditions. The bealach is reached, and as this is about the half way point, I would suggest a good spot for a break (around 30 minutes), anyone feeling particularly fit may choose to take a quick hike up the kips instead of having a break though! Refreshed, we’ll now head on across the main Pentland ridge, taking in South Black Hill, Scald Law, Carnethy Hill and Turnhouse Hill. The descent from Turnhouse Hill takes us close to Flotterstone, there is the option to have a comfort/coffee break here. The last section of the walk takes us from Flotterstone back to our starting point, we’ll go round Castlelaw before one final climb of the day - Allermuir Hill, then its downhill all the way for a well earned drink and possibly cake at the Swanston! Hills climbed: Capelaw 1489ft Harbour 1381ft Bell’s 1332ft Black Hill 1643ft South Black Hill 1644ft Scald Law 1900ft Carnethy Hill 1879ft Turnhouse Hill 1660ft Allermuir 1617ft and possibly... West Kip 1808ft East Kip 1781ft Please be aware that some of the routes on this walk are on fairly difficult ground - there is little or no path in number of parts of Bell’s Hill and Black Hill. Good walking boots are essential! OS Maps suggests just over 7 hours for this walk, Naismith’s equation slightly more. With breaks and depending on size/fitness of group I expect minimum of 8 hours Overall this should be a really good walk - please do consider if it is for you - we are taking in at least 9 hills with some difficult underfoot conditions, whilst I don’t want to leave anyone behind, we’d also like to finish before it gets dark! As ever please make sure you bring all the food, clothing etc required for a day in the hills

    What we're about

This is a group for anyone interested in hillwalking. We aim to be an extended group of people with common hillwalking interests, as it is sometimes hard to find convenient times to go hillwalking with your hillwalking friends (or hard to coerce friends to drag themselves up a hill for you). We don't plan large, organized walks - rather, if anyone wants to go hillwalking, they can schedule a meetup (contact an organizer to become an event organizer), and whoever is interested can RSVP.

As walks are not "led" walks, group members need to (and by going on walks, assert that they do) take responsibility for their own safety and should be comfortable with arranging and participating in hillwalks themselves - for example, choosing suitable equipment, choosing routes and navigating in good or adverse weather conditions.

Please note that no-shows will be removed from the group. Please update your RSVP if you decide not to attend.
