Ben Cruachan

  • Mar 22, 2014 · 8:00 AM

The Dalmally Horseshoe including Ben Cruchan above Loch Awe is a stunning ridge of peaks with a particularly fine aspect when viewed from the north. The nearby Munro pair of Beinn a'Chochuill and Beinn Eunaich are softer in comparison, but offer fine panoramas on clear days.

The intention is to walk the complete horseshoe.

2100m (6,900ft)

21km (13m)

walking : 8-9hrs

Beinn Eunaich (989m, Munro 156) Beinn a'Chochuill (980m, Munro 172) Stob Diamh (998m, Munro 141) Ben Cruachan (1126m, Munro 31)

It’s winter so crampons and axes are a must. These and stiff boots can be hired from Tiso (but note the university clubs hire them too)

I’ll be driving from Edinburgh on the Saturday morning for anyone who wants a lift.

You did good Penny. It was quite an experience for a relative notice to be out in those conditions. The snow was falling so heavily that footprints were filled in in minutes. We summited Meall Cuanail, a top, then headed back down the mountain as you couldn't decipher snow from cloud. But it was fun and what's the worst than could have happened…. Tis a pity that two folk didn't turn up or bother to inform me of their change in plans. It show a certain lack of consideration.

hard through the deep snow, hampered by fitness and gear, note to self! Thanks Martyn, I need to build up fitness and streamline my gear for future, thanks for your patience.

    The forcast is:

Southwest veering westerly, speeds varying through the day, for periods up to 35mph; but lulls to 25mph or perhaps temporarily.

Likely to impede walking on higher areas, and will make walking difficult at times.
Frequent snow and hail; small risk lightning
Heavy hail and snow showers, sometimes one after another giving 2 hours or so of almost constant precipitation and whiteout. Risk thunder.

Cloud base varying quickly, overall extensive cloud on the hills, to a few
hundred metres in and around showers, but particularly inland, breaks to 950m, and sometimes higher tops temporarily clearing.

Bursts of sunshine, mainly well inland.
Very varied visibility from almost zero in snow and cloud to intermittently excellent below cloud.

    -3C.
Freezing level 500 to 700m; will tend to rise through the day.

So based on this the walk is ON. if ou plan to drop out please email me so I know who is going. Many thanks.

Heya, I just stumbled across this group today - and this walk seems awfully tempting. I have a couple of questions: any spaces on a car from Edinburgh? (I'm car-less). And #2: is it still going ahead? I ask since the weather outlook is rather windy, especially for such an exposed walk along ridges! I'd need to hire/get some gear, so just checking it's still going ahead/would be possible for me to get there!

    Hi folks

transport. I'm giving Ann, Penny and Alan a lift so my little car is now full.

Arrangements: Everyone should meet at the carpark at opposite the power station and be ready to leave at 8am. I'll be applying the '10 min rule' which is if you're not there by ten past we'll be gone. I'll make final decision regarding the weather at 5pm on the Friday and will post the information here.

The route is described as one that 'commands respect, for the traverse of its severn tops with ascent of 6900ft is one of the classic expeditions on the southern highland' so just spend a moment to reflect and ask yourself if you're ready and fit for this in the middle of a Scottish winter.

Finally, this is NOT a led walk. You'll be there as an equal on the understanding you know how to navigate, have the equipment required, know how to use it and have read 'Do you take responsibility for your own safety?' If you have a concern please email. And thanks to those who have already done so.

Crampons and an axe are a must. No crampons, no walk! I sound like a teacher here which I am. But after yesterday when condition were 'fun' there can be no discussion.

Please check your crampons fit and practise putting them on and off (with gloves on) so you can do it quickly. Make sure the straps are long enough or short enough. And you'll need map 50.

Hi all, I'm assuming you've all read the the discussion about taking responsibility for yourself in the hill and what that means. You'll need crampons, stiff boots and an axe for this walk and some experience with them. I have a spare axe thats available if you need one.

If anyone is in doubt about their skills or experience please just contact me and we can discuss it. I'd rather know then we can take consideration of that.

I'm travelling up on the day from Edinburgh. I have three seats available if anyone wants a lift
