South Shiel Ridge (Glen Clunie)

  • May 24, 2014 · 8:00 AM

South Glen Shiel Ridge is a Munro baggers delight as 7 Munros and numerous tops can be climbed in long single outing. The walker can look forward to miles of high walking on narrowish ridge with grassy slopes dropping away on the south and cliffs sweeping into Glen Shiel on the northern side.

It can be broken into two shorter sections, but the intention is walk the whole ridge.

25 km/ 15.53 miles

1750 m/[masked] ft

9 hours +

I will be driving up from Edinburgh, either Friday night and camping or very early Saturday.

May I just point out this is a big day and a certain level of fitness (and determination) will be required.

I hope everyone had a grand day out in the hills yesterday. I did. It was good to make new friends.

    May 25, 2014

  • Martyn

Hi all I've not heard from Penny or Martin Smith. I'll not delete them, but it would be good if they got in touch.

Miguel and Konrad, as you're new, I can only assume you'll be getting there yourself. And that you know what you're letting yourself in for!!!

To avoid doubt we'll meet at GR078118 map 33 at 8 am.

    May 22, 2014

    • Louise

Actually in konrad's defence he posted that a number of weeks ago . You obviously did not read it.!!!! Additionally I find that kind of response very unnecessary , inappropriate and offensive john ! Who am I walking with tomow !!!

      May 23, 2014

    • Martyn

Hi Konrad, ignore the comment from John. It was totally unacceptable and as organiser I've expressed my displeasure to him. i look forward to seeing you in the hills sometime soon. Martyn

    Hi there,

I just wanted to let everyone know that there is now a place available at the Kintail Wee Bunkhouse for tonight and tomorrow. Just in case anybody is interested.

    See you all tomorrow,

Just off to make a couple of purchases and fuel, then heading for Loch Cluanie. Tomorrow looks like a fantastic day, see everyone there.

  • Louise

Ok so are we meeting at the start or end ???!!!!

    May 22, 2014

    • Toni O' T.

So Sammy (may be at Shiel Bridge campsite), Brian (wee Kintail bunkhouse? Friday night and myself are all based at end of walk. A lift down to start of walk (Cluanie inn part) would be great please. Don't fancy a 12 mile walk before we even begin...panic!

      May 23, 2014

    • Louise

Hi Toni I will be coming from glencoe and will need to pass the start to get to you (another hour drive there and back to start) as you are all coming from nearer the end . So I am sure one of the boys shlld be able to take you to start of walk in the morning as you will all pretty much be staying around the same place ? Can someone who will be close to Toni arrange to give her a lift in the morning please ?

      May 23, 2014

  • Martyn

Hi folks, the walk is upon us. Forecast isn't great at the moment. I've emailed everyone, please response to the email rather than post your reply here.

It would good to know who is where and when. I understand some are starting at 8 am. Therefore why don't we all agree to meet then at GR078118 map 33 at 8 am.

Has anyone thought about getting cars to the other end…?

Time to get organized, there is a nice spot for camping on loch Cluanie just before the Inn, I intend to travel up tomorrow afternoon, get there for early evening, pitch a tent and do some fishing on loch Cluanie. Set off in the morning to the end of the walk, leave my car and cycle back to the meet up point and meet everyone there. Then look forward to a pretty straight forward walk, simples :-)

Looks like there will still be a few potential "no-shows" who haven't changed their status, or even bothered to post on here as to what their plans are. Which I think is a bit unfair this close to the walk, as it's way too late for anyone on the wait list now to try and arrange a weekend outing, especially with it being so far away. From reading through all the messages, their are 5 folks who haven't said if they are going or not. Martyn, does that tie in with responses to the email you sent out ? Apologies if I have offended anyone but I'm just trying to be helpful and to ensure we have cars at either end to allow us all to be re-united with our own vehicles on Saturday evening.

Transport, Penny, Lukas, Stewart and myself all leaving Edinburgh on Sat morning. I suggest we leave at 4 am.

Boots rewaxed, tent checked, sleeping bag ready, tent pegs checked, enough clean clothing checked. Looks like I'm ready to rumble, Friday can't come soon enough, seems like we have been waiting ages. I've driven past these beauties so often in the last couple of years and just gazed. Now I get to meet them in person....

Ah that's grand . Ok just to say ( apologise for repetition) I am staying at the hostel next to the clachaig so i will have a 2 hour drive to start of walk in the morning and aim to be there for 8 (organise cars get the 'bits' on , start walk latest 9 . Can i suggest everyone puts up the time they are planning on starting /happy with 8 ? so we have an idea of groups ? :)

      May 15, 2014

    • Toni O' T.

I'm happy with starting walk as early as feasible so your timings look good to me, Louise. Could I have a lift to start of the walk please from Kintail wee bunkhouse. Lukas and Brian staying there too on Friday night. Anyone else staying up that end of walk?

      May 16, 2014

  • Martyn

Hi all, I'm travelling up either Friday evening at about 6 or early sat morning from edinbirgh. I can't remember who I've offered a lift to and who's confirmed. I have space for three with gear. I have tent and stove etc. let me know if you want a lift.

Hi! As this tough journey is approaching, i'd suggest to do some easy training the weekend before (17-18), either saturday or sunday. Maybe the Pentlands? I'm open to your suggestions, but sth close to Edinburgh please.

Hi Louise decided not to go for your Sat walk after all. I have Bidean nam Bian and another one on Sunday and need to spend the night in Glasgow for that so will have a lazy Sat after all. Thanks though for the offer of a lift and look forward to meeting you and everyone on our big ridge walk very soon now.

Haha I like your optimism john however hate to be a kill joy ..but a friend of mine who is munro bagging pretty much every fortnight came off after the 4th , said it was really tough . Hate to point out the obvious but everyone will have different paces . I will still be fairly confident to expect 12 hrs plus If it's a nice day I like to stop and take it all in . Never one for running up them . I done a 12 hr day on sunday with only 2 summits and it was bloody hard going . Calves are killing me today . So I am a bit anxious but will defo give it a go :)

Hope we get a weekend like the one just past, I had a pleasant day yesterday out fishing, even managed to catch some sunburn as well as some nice trout....

I've just removed a few folk who haven't been in touch. If I've got it wrong, please contact me. As for travel and arrangements, may I suggest that, unless you have something already planned, we just wait until closer the date. There's plenty of time for others to drop out yet…

I'd be surprised if we get 10 folk on the day. Smile

Looking forward to 24th trip. I will probably be going but need to check transport/accommodation etc. I may be able to offer a lift if someone is interested. Sorry for the profile picture but it is taken from LinkendIn account. Once I have something more appropriate, I will change it.

Hi I need a lift please from Edinburgh (just lost mine). I have accommodation booked for Fri, Sat and Sun night at this point because was thinking of Five Sisters on Monday. Now a bit unsure re Sisters. But definite for the South Shiel Ridge. Is there anyone going up on Friday and back either Sunday or Monday please. Fuel costs shared of course.

Just a heads up, friends were climbing on the opposite side of the SGSR over the weekend and there is still some snow on the tops, but 2 weeks to go so we should be fine by the time we are out. Pity I can't add a photo on here till after the walk date, will upload it to photobucket, link below.

Well said Martyn . My concern at the moment Is that if we do not have 2 cars for our particular group. I ain't trusting a taxi and I ain't walking all the way back to car . I am up in the area for a couple of weeks bagging munros. If it is not confirmed that we have 2 cars for the group planning on taking 10-12 hrs then I have no option but to plan something else. I did suggest we meet up beforehand perhaps in Edinburgh to discuss but this never took off . I will be staying by the clachaig so I have a 2 hour drive in the morning to get to you all . However it would be disappointing to get there and find a) no one there and b ) no organisation of cars (start and end ) for the groups. So would really appreciate if people clld confirm which group they are planning on walking , whether they have a car and if 8am meeting time is acceptable? If these details are not identified I will just do something else that day which does not leave me careless at the end :)

Sorry but I now have work commitments around that weekend and can't make this walk any more :( I had recently arranged to give a lift to Lukas and Penny on Friday and back on Sunday so they will be looking for other car options. Hopefully someone else will be able to give them a lift. I'm sure it will be a great walk. Crawford.

  • Val W.

Sorry, but all this dialogue is putting me off. I suspect 24 people on a hill walk is maybe just 23 people too many!

    April 28, 2014

    • Martyn

Hi Val, this dialogue is all part and parcel of a new club getting its self organised. This is all new to all of us and may be its not the best way, but at the moment its the only way. You've also known that there were 24 folk going for weeks.

      April 29, 2014

  • Martyn

I'm either looking to travel up with someone, or Ill drive and therefore there are places available to and from Edinburgh.

    April 28, 2014

  • Martyn

So, I'm sending you all an email asking you to confirm if you're still going. Respond within 7 days or I'll remove you from the list. Confirming your attendance will assume you've bought the map, read the descriptions, realised where these mountains are, thought about how you're getting there, considered overnight accommodation, etc.

Please note this event is a BIG day out requiring a level of determination and fitness that will only be achieved if you have regularly been out in the hills bagging, not one, but several Munro a day. Finally, if you find this email a little blunt, try organising an event: it's not fun.

    3 · April 27, 2014

Hi Martyn, and everyone else. I'm still a definite. I'm still in two minds as to whether or not to drive up from Edinburgh super early on the Saturday morning or stay over on the Friday night but I'll get this sorted this week. Any advice/thoughts from anyone on this would be appreciated. Either way I'll be driving back down on the Saturday night. I have plenty of room in the car if anyone needs a lift either way.

      April 28, 2014

    • Toni O' T.

Hi Martyn I'm a definite too. I have booked my accommodation and have been out almost every weekend hillwalking. I was up Ben Starav yesterday. Tired after it I admit but think it will certainly help towards the big walk.

      April 28, 2014

  • Louise

Additionally agree with Martyn about fitness levels and skill although I say 10-12 hrs slow this still needs an element of fitness. Additionally I would feel rather uncomfortable if someone did not know how to navigate themselves of a hill if for some unfortunate reason you had to do this on yr own . And would expect individuals to have all the necessary kit in bag I.e head torch , enough food etc :)

    April 28, 2014

  • Lukas B.

    Hi Martyn,

I will definitely participate in the walk. Accomodation in the Kintail Lodge bunkhouse is booked!

    Best,

  • Penny

Hi Martyn, yes I am still confirmed in going, just back from completing whw in 4 days, a couple of minor injuries which will be better. I need to organise my lift and possible accommodation, which I will get on with, also I will be in the slowish group, with Brian, Crawf, sorry if this is not Toni's slow group, but I've done more munro's with Brian, so know we're about the same. Also appreciate the organisation of such an event, as a keen walker.

I'm still a definite but I think my +1 might be a doubt, I'll find out this week for definite so if he can't make it then I'll take him off the list to give someone else the opportunity to go. I've not done as many as 7 munros in a day, 5 is my most at Lochnagar but I'm sure I will cope.....

    1 · April 27, 2014

    • Martyn

Thanks Brian. My post wasn't about putting people off. Just asking to be honest and not muck me about.

      April 27, 2014

  • Martyn

    A moan!

yesterday 5 of us ventured out and had a fun day climbing mountains. The company was good and the weather poor. However, the amount of hassle to organise this was disappointing. Three weeks ago there were 18 folk going. One by one they dropped out. Some offered perfectly respectable reasons, others claimed not to have the skills or experience needed, others said nothing and just didn't turn up. Some had clearly little idea of where these mountains were and had done no research into the day out. I find it frustrating when people either fail to respond to emails and posts, or excuse themselves by saying their skills aren't up to the challenge days before the event as their skills can't have been up to the challenge when they signed up.

That's great there are taxis . I have to admit I would rather have the cars ( just incase it's a miserable day , don't fancy waiting around for a taxi plus I don't think the taxi man would be too chuffed us getting in a taxi soaking wet and mokit lol. So I am hoping we have a car at each end to drop off / pick up . I will defo be taking my car to start as I will be travelling up from the clachaig . Do we have 2 cars for this group ?

    April 13, 2014

  • Martyn

    Hi folks

Wow, 24 folk are signed up for this which is great. However its creates a few problems not least just keeping the group together. Therefore, I'm proposing that we split up into say 4 groups of 6. The ridge itself 14kms long according the SMC guide with seven Munro and can be completed in a day by 'strong' walkers. It can also be broken into two days of walking rather than one.

Maybe some folk who intend to be in the area for over the weekend might prefer to complete the hills in two days. Others might want to complete the walk in one day but groups could be based on average walking speed. This will inevitably raise the issue of who's in charge: and the answer is you are. This is NOT a led walk. You'll be there as an equal on the understanding you know how to navigate, have the equipment required, know how to use it and have read 'Do you take responsibility for your own safety?' If you have a concern please email. Suggestions? Martyn

Just out of curiosity ..How many are planning doing it around 8 hours and how many for around the 12 hrs ?

    March 21, 2014

    • A former member
      A former member

I'm only taking a rough guess at the 10 hrs as I've never done a 7 munro walk before. Longest I've been out was Lochnagar which was 5 munros and took us 11 hrs, but it has quite a long walkout. WH lists that as 18 miles / 9 - 11 hrs but it's not just a straight comparison, the longest part of that is getting to Lochnagar itself which took us near 4 hrs. The South Shiel ridge is less in distance but more in height climbed; if that makes sense ?

I'm still planning on doing this one, although I'm not getting much in the way of work at the moment (I'm an I.T. contractor) so hopefully things pick up soon for me. I'd like to think I'd be able to do the 5 sisters the day after the 7 on the south ridge, but bear in mind the 5 sisters involves a bit more up and down from what I've been told.... Once I confirm that I am definitely going, I might be in a position to offer lifts.

    March 16, 2014

It's a tough call to be able to do another 5 after doing 7 on the Saturday. Might be better leaving them for another day. Plus I've also realised that if I do the 5 on the Sunday I'll go past 100 and I was keeping that magic number for when I do the AE ridge in June..... Plus you can actually do 7 on the North side as well, the 5 sisters and the 2 brothers. That could be another good weekend in itself.

      March 21, 2014

    • Penny

you're right Brian, the south shiel alone will be enough, keep me in mind tho if you plan to do the others another time.

Hi folks. I am really sorry but I am going to have to pull out of the walk. Really sorry Toni, I hope you can get a lift up from someone. Kay

Change of plans. At the end staying in Ullapool for this weekend.
Hope to do this walk soon; looks like an amazing walk.
