What we're about

Edinburgh Laughter Club was established in June 2010 and is run by Jo Bluett - a Laughter Facilitator, Laughter Yoga Leader & Teacher/Trainer who also set up Laughter For Health (www.laughterforhealth.co.uk).

Laughter really is the best medicine! It has amazing physiological and emotional benefits. We use Laughter Yoga to generate laughter from the body rather than the mind - this is important since our sense of humour is subjective - what makes one person laugh may be totally unfunny or even offensive to someone else. More importantly, however, we don't always feel like laughing or can feel we have nothing to laugh about - this is often when we need the physiological and emotional benefits of a really good laugh the most.

Laughter Yoga initiates laughter through laughter exercises which allow us to "laugh for no reason" - using unconditional laughter which, when practised in a group, quickly becomes genuine, infectious and healing. Amazingly, it is a scientific fact that the body cannot tell the difference between fake laughter and real laughter - it produces exactly the same physiological benefits. We also use yogic breathing and stretching to calm the body and release tension and to endorse and increase the effects of the laughter.

Hearty laughter boosts your immune system, releases endorphins, raises your heart rate to boost circulation and oxygen uptake, increases our positivity and confidence, tones muscles and aids weight loss (yes really!) and reduces stress and tension.

Laughter is also a social connector allowing us to develop more caring, sharing relationships, and with more laughter in our lives we become more tolerant, more patient and less judgemental. Laughter also builds our resilience and our ability to cope with the stress and challenges we all face in life.

The Laughter Club session includes laughter exercises, deep breathing, laughter meditation, relaxation and tips on how to bring more laughter into your life with some simple practices.

Laughter For Health also runs regular Laughter Workshops which allow us to really explore our fun and creative side as well as learning more about the science and research of laughter. Jo is a member of the Laughter Network and is registered with Laughter Yoga International.
