About Jake Cogan

"On rare occasions you realise that what you are listening to is what a real singer should be, someone with a direct connection between soul and voice. Jake Cogan is one of those rare few." - Dick Gaughan

Born in Lanark, Scotland, Jake Cogan comes from a huge family of Irish descent and is the youngest of a long line of musicians. Unsurprisingly therefore, she began singing at an early age in theatre, choirs and in the front room with her family. As a young teenager Cogan was already doing the rounds on the Glasgow circuit, fronting an established band.

At seventeen, she joined forces with producer Sandy Jones (Wet, Wet, Wet and The Precious Organisation/EMI), and embarked upon a career in the music industry. Working at some of the world's largest music events, performing at Earls Court and the Millennium Dome, she absorbed all that was thrown her way writing for other musicians as well as for television and film. At this time Cogan also started work on what was then to be her debut album 'Beautiful Sinner.'

Work on the album came to a dramatic halt with the sudden and shocking death of her father, who had not only been her closest friend but biggest musical influence. Her bereavement meant she gave up on her music career for three years, writing and singing only ever in the confines of her own home.

In 2007 Cogan met with Ross Cockburn through a mutual friend. That meeting transpired to be an auspicious one as they headed off to Dundee to see Cockburn's friend Boo Hewerdine play. Cockburn had formerly been signed to Warner Chappell, managed by Kenny MacDonald (The Proclaimers) and had worked with various artists and producers including Billy Mackenzie (Associates) and Hugh Jones (Echo and The Bunnymen, 4AD).

That night in a quiet post-gig session Cogan, for the first time since her father's death, played to a live audience. Hewerdine was massively impressed and urged the pair to work together. They immediately formed a close, creative relationship.

Their first recruit was Iain Bruce (Hobotalk, Sony/EMI) as their bass player, and the trio set about finding the lineup that would eventually become The Liberty Roses.

Jed Potts joined next contributing sublime style and improvisation on lead guitar and mandolin, followed by the skillful awareness of Danny Grant on percussion (himself no stranger to the industry having been raised with his mother in Belle and Sebastian). The line-up was finally complete with American violinist Emily Peppers (classically trained yet strongly influenced by her Midwestern roots, she is also regarded an academic specialist in historic string instruments).

In 2007 Cogan and The Liberty Roses toured Scotland sideways on a sofa in the back of a haulage van, maintaining a hectic gigging schedule with the philosophy 'no hall too small'. During this time they honed their music, performed all over the Scottish Highlands and throughout England (from Belladrum and the Isle of Skye to Cambridge and Camden), gaining them a reputation for being a hugely entertaining ensemble.

In 2008, the band recorded the EP 'Honest Mirror' which was produced by Boo Hewerdine (Eddi Reader, KD Lang) and Mark Freegard (The Breeders, Del Amitrie). This was immediately embraced by radio stations all over Scotland, which remains a mystery as it had never been officially released.

Cogan's musical influences range from Jackson Browne and Tom Waits to Bjork, Nirvana and The Velvet Underground. She draws on various styles to arrive at her innovative and unique vocal sound - an organic and intoxicating uniqueness that others have tried to pin down with little success.

Their debut album is due for release in November 2010 and features various guests, including percussionist Guy Nicolson of Moishe's Bagel and BBC Radio 2's multi award-winning artist Kris Drever.

"It is a great record - my favourite new singer." - Boo Hewerdine
