Interested in learning more about planting & growing? ’Organic gardening for nutrition, using permaculture ethics and principles’ is a free, educational course, running from March until September 2024. It will take place on Fridays, from 2.00pm to 3.30pm at our ELREC plot with Lauriston Farm. Participants are expected to help with planting, weeding, and more - anyone attending a min. of 50% of the sessions is entitled to a share of the harvest. March 15 | Permaculture ethics and principles, planting fruit bushes, planning a crop rotation - You will need: pen and paper.
March 22 | Selecting seed varieties to reduce pests and diseases. Applying organic fertilisers.
March 29 | Planting seed potatoes, onion setts and broad beans. You will need to bring trowels.
April 05 | Sowing ‘Mediterranean’ seed in small pots and propagators: beans, winter squash,
Courgette - Participants asked to propagate some seeds at their homes
April 12 | Sowing temperate crops (cabbage, calabrese, celeriac, kale, leeks, beetroot)
April 19 | Compost making, conserving soil health with no-dig – You will need to bring a small bag of food waste
April 26 | Sowing salad crops in raised beds (carrots, lettuce, spring onions, radish, rocket)
May 3 | Managing pests naturally – Part I
May 10 | Making natural fertilisers: comfrey tea, seaweed
May 17 | Transplanting French beans
May 24 | Transplanting squashes and courgettes
May 31 | Avoiding slug damage
June 7 | Conserving beneficial insects
June 14 | Nitrogen-fixing crops
June 21 | Harvesting and drying garlic
June 28 | Harvesting and drying onions

Edinburgh Climate Meetup - informal sessions for anyone interested in community level climate and nature action.

Join the first of ECCAN’s Climate Cafe at the Central Library. Come to meet new people and share your ideas, concerns and projects related to climate and nature action. This is a friendly, informal space for people to connect with each other. We hope that this will help in bringing knowledge together and inspiring each other. All welcome!

Date & Time: 6pm - 7.30pm, Tuesday 30th April.
Location: Central Library, 'Warm and Welcoming' space on the Mezzanine Floor. Follow the signs.
Capacity limited to 15 people.

This is the first climate cafe and there will be an opportunity to share ideas for future sessions. We will facilitate some light discussion activities but there will also be plenty of time for free flowing discussions.

Teas, coffees and biscuits will be available. Feel free to bring and share food.

This climate cafe is run by ECCAN volunteers and is a partnership with the Central Library.

Dear All,

ELREC runs a community garden in Rannoch Community Centre. The garden is run by Rhona our dear expert community gardener. The idea is that anyone can come and learn skills and share their experience of food growing and put it into practice. It is open to everyone. You can come once or you can come every week - up to you. It's a friendly social space for people to grow food and enjoy being outside.

The produce grown is shared among participants.

Every Friday morning at 9:30 at the Rannoch Community Centre, 6 Rannoch Terrace, EH4 7ER. Tel: 0131 339 5351

You can just turn up at the centre through the main door and Rhona will be there to welcome you.
